JPJ impounds 101 luxury vehicles for various traffic offences – no insurance, using plate of a different car

The road transport department (JPJ) has seized 101 luxury vehicles that have been linked to various traffic offences. During the course of the nationwide operation, called Ops Luxury, the department hauled an assortment of vehicles from various brands such as Porsche, Ferrari, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Lotus, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

These vehicles were found to have violated traffic laws by either having expired road tax (LKM), no valid insurance coverage, displaying the number plate of a different registered vehicle, using illegal number plates or for having mismatched chassis numbers to that listed in the JPJ database.

The department said that Selangor and Kuala Lumpur recorded the most cases, with 17 vehicles each, followed by Penang (14), Perak (11), Johor (10), Kedah (nine), Pahang and Melaka (five each), Negri Sembilan (four), Kelantan (three), Terengganu and Sabah (two each), and Sarawak and Perlis (one each).

All of the vehicles are currently detained at the JPJ storage depot for investigation and further action under the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333) and related regulations, said JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli.

He said that the operation sends a clear message that the department will not compromise with any party that fails to comply with road regulations. “Owning a luxury vehicle is not an excuse to ignore one’s responsibilities as a legal road user,” he said, calling on vehicle owners to be responsible by ensuring that vehicle documents and driving licenses are always updated and valid.

Stating that JPJ will continue similar operations from time to time, he said the public can channel information regarding violations of the law via the MyJPJ app’s e-Complaint function or email [email protected] with complete complaint details.
