Musk’s space technology company SpaceX has experienced quite a few rocket explosions as of late, and that’s drawing the ire of Mexico. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has threatened to sue SpaceX over possible contamination from the failed rocket launches, which has rained debris across the nearby Texas/Mexico border. The SpaceX town of Starbase is about 13 kilometres away from Matamoros, the closest town in Mexico. Sheinbaum is also looking into potential international law violations, while environmental officials and groups on both sides of the border are concerned about the environmental impact of the launches on wildlife habitats.

June 25 - Legal team claims he “does not use a computer”

Amidst a legal battle with OpenAI, Musk’s lawyers have claimed the tech billionaire “does not use a computer”, in response to accusations that he failed to comply with the discovery process. Musk’s attorney disputed OpenAI’s claim that Musk’s legal team had “no plans to collect any documents” from himself or his AI firm xAI, explaining that searches were being done on Musk’s mobile phone, and he didn’t use a computer. Musk has recently made posts about using his “ancient PC laptop” and several X employees have anonymously said they’ve seen him use a laptop on occasion.

June 23 - Launches robotaxis in Austin

Musk announced that Tesla’s “robotaxi launch” in Austin is underway. Flat fee rides for $4.20 are being offered in the Texas capital. Tesla planned to have front-seat riders acting as “safety monitors”, and witnesses appeared to confirm this, spotting people in the passenger seat of Model Ys. Texas lawmakers had moved to enact rules on autonomous vehicles in the state, but the law doesn’t take effect until September 1.

June 19 - SpaceX rocket explodes during test

Musk’s SpaceX Starship rocket exploded during a routine test, sending a massive fireball high into the Texas sky. The explosion - which was broadcast on a livestream of the SpaceX facility - led to a large fire that burned for two hours. SpaceX stated that no injuries were reported and there were no hazards to nearby residents, but warned people not to approach the area. Musk didn’t seem fazed by this latest Starship setback, posting “Just a scratch” on X while also sharing a post that said “RIP Ship 36”.

June 17 - Activates Starlink in Iran

Musk’s Starlink has re-connected the internet in Iran amidst rising military tensions with Israel. Musk himself confirmed that “the beams are on” via an X post, effectively bypassing censorship as Iran’s government restricts internet access. Starlink uses LEO (low Earth orbit) satellite systems to provide internet in remote or censored areas, and has recently been implemented in locations like Ukraine and Gaza.

June 12 - Sued by French Tesla owners

A coalition of Tesla owners in France is suing Musk’s automaker over his former role in the White House and his support of far-right European politicians. He co-founded Zip2 in 1995

Musk’s first big break came in 1995 when he co-founded Zip2 with his brother Kimbal and Greg Kouri. The company developed an internet city guide with maps, directions and information for newspapers, earning contracts with The New York Times and the Chicago Tribune. Musk has drawn the ire of a former richest man in the world: Bill Gates. The co-founder of Microsoft turned philanthropist told the Financial Times that “the picture of the world's richest man killing the world's poorest children is not a pretty one.” Gates pointed to Musk’s cuts to USAID, which reduced grants to a hospital in Mozambique that was preventing women from transmitting HIV to their babies. “I'd love for him to go in and meet the children that have now been infected with HIV because he cut that money,” Gates said of Musk.

His involvement with PayPal led to more success

While Musk was no longer CEO of what would become PayPal, being on the board of directors enabled him to take the next step in his career. The X.com / Confinity merger became PayPal in 2001 and was acquired by eBay in 2002 for $1.5 billion. The area where Musk’s space technology company operates will officially become a city, after residents approved incorporating a patch of land in southern Texas as the new municipality. Musk and SpaceX began buying land in the area in 2012, and the new city now covers just under four square kilometres. Starbase will have a government composed of a mayor and two commissioners that will handle city planning, taxation and other local issues.

He founded SpaceX in 2002

Musk’s vision of decreasing the costs of space launch led to his founding of SpaceX in 2002. After three failed attempts, Falcon 1 successfully launched into orbit in 2008. SpaceX has since become the world’s dominant space launch provider, making advances in rocket propulsion, reusable launch vehicles, human spaceflight and satellite constellation technology Starlink.

May 1 - Will not be replaced as Tesla CEO

Musk and Tesla both shot down a report from the Wall Street Journal that the company’s board had begun searching for a new CEO. Multiple unnamed sources said that the board had contacted executive placement firms as early as March. He co-founded Neuralink in 2016

Following Musk’s life and career is never boring, except when you’re literally talking about The Boring Company. April 25 – Elon Musk pivoting to robotaxis

With Tesla’s sales and deliveries dropping, Musk is banking on a robotaxi strategy as the automaker’s salvation. Tesla plans to launch a paid robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, by June 2025, using about 10 to 20 Model Ys with self-driving technology. However, it has been reported that a safety driver will still be “present to intervene as needed”. The Cybercab—a two-seater vehicle with no steering wheel or pedals—is expected to enter large-scale production in 2026. Musk has already turned heads with bold claims that Tesla’s robotaxi initiative will “move the financial needle in a significant way” by late 2026.

He purchased Twitter / X in 2022

Musk had long questioned Twitter’s commitment to freedom of speech, and often expressed interest in buying the social media platform. In 2022, he made a $43-billion offer and by October, the deal was done. Musk rebranded Twitter as X in 2023, and has controversially overhauled its verification system, laid off half its workforce, tanked its value and spread misinformation.

April 23 – Elon Musk pledges to cut back on DOGE work as Tesla profits plummet

Musk appears to be confirming rumours that he will spend less time working with the federal government. On a recent call with investors and analysts, he said: “If the ship of America goes down, we all go down with it.” This comes after Tesla’s quarterly earnings report showed a 71% year-over-year plunge in net income, and a 20% drop in revenue from selling cars. Musk did claim that demand for Tesla vehicles remains high, and that he won’t entirely stop working with DOGE.

He wasn’t always a Republican

While a lot of Musk’s recent political involvement has been with Donald Trump and the Republicans, that wasn’t always the case. He first registered as an independent voter, and voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016. Four years later, Musk endorsed Democratic candidate Andrew Yang in the primary—supporting his proposed universal basic income—and voted for Joe Biden.

April 21 - Elon Musk is reportedly leaving government due to left-wing attacks

According to a recent report from the Washington Post, Musk is growing tired of perceived growing attacks from the left, and will leave his government role as a result. It’s unclear when this might occur, but his special government employee status does expire at the end of May. Sources say that Musk believes his work with DOGE won’t be undone if he leaves, despite speculation that his influence is already waning.

He became a Republican in 2022

In May of 2022, Musk declared that he no longer supported the Democrats, branding them the “party of division and hate,” and said he would vote Republican for the first time, encouraging “independent-minded voters” to do the same. Later that year, Musk gave more than $50 million to conservative political action committee Citizens for Sanity.

April 17 - Aiming to build crucial part of Trump’s “Golden Dome”

According to sources, Musk’s SpaceX is the frontrunner to build a key component of Trump’s “Golden Dome” missile defence shield. Musk and SpaceX are expected to partner with Palantir and Anduril - companies that were also founded by Trump supporters - to deliver hundreds of missile-tracking satellites. Trump’s “Golden Dome” proposal is based on Israel’s “Iron Dome” defence system, but on a much larger scale.

He became a Trump supporter in 2024

As election season drew closer in 2024, Musk hadn’t yet publicly endorsed a candidate. However, when Donald Trump had shots fired at him at a Pennsylvania rally in July, Musk threw his full support behind him, calling him the toughest president since Theodore Roosevelt.

April 16 - Reportedly wants a “legion-level” of offspring

A new report from the Wall Street Journal sheds some light on Musk’s growing brood. Conservative influencer Ashley St. Clair - who went public with having his child in February - provided extensive proof that he is the father. One text shows Musk telling St. Clair that he hopes to “reach legion-level before the apocalypse” when it comes to making babies, suggesting that they “will need to use surrogates.” Musk’s apparent obsession with dwindling birth rates has led him to believe that civilization is near collapse, hence needing the backup plan of a colony on Mars.

He created the America PAC

Now that Musk had picked his horse in the race, it was time to break out the wallet. In July, Musk created America PAC, a super PAC that was backed by several prominent names in tech. Musk contributed nearly $75 million to support Trump’s campaign, and in October he promoted a sweepstakes that awarded $1 million to two randomly selected voters in battleground states.

April 9 - DOGE audited by GAO

Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is facing an audit from the Government Accountability Office (GAO), an independent investigative agency for Congress. The probe has been ongoing since March and covers DOGE’s data-handling practices at government agencies such as the Departments of Labor, Homeland Security, Health and Human Services, Education, the Treasury, and Social Security. The GAO is reportedly requesting comprehensive details from these Cabinet-level agencies, including incident reports on “potential or actual misuse of agency systems or data”, among other information.

April 8 - Net worth drops below $300B

Musk’s net worth has been taking a beating lately. The Bloomberg Billionaires Index showed that it has plunged below $300 billion to $298 billion as of April 7. Since the beginning of 2025, Musk’s net worth has shrunk by nearly $135 billion, or 31%. This decrease is attributed to his advisory role in Donald Trump’s administration - in particular his government-slashing initiatives with DOGE - the subsequent backlash against Tesla, and the implementation of new tariffs.

April 8 - Calls trade advisor a “moron”

Musk is escalating the feud between himself and one of Donald Trump’s top advisors over tariffs. He took to X to call trade advisor Peter Navarro “truly a moron” and “dumber than a sack of bricks” over the wisdom of applying tariffs to dozens of countries around the world. Navarro had earlier dismissed the Tesla founder as a “car assembler”, to which Musk responded that his company “has the most American-made cars.”

He did a 2-hour livestream with Trump

In August of 2024, Musk spoke with Trump for more than two hours on an X livestream. It was here that Musk first suggested the concept of a government efficiency commission, and offered to serve on it, to which Trump replied that he’d “love” to have him involved. Trump also told Musk that his help was required to eliminate the Department of Education.

April 5 - Breaks with Trump on tariffs with EU

Musk's opinion on tariffing foreign nations doesn't align with the man he closely advises, President Donald Trump. At an event hosted by Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, he said he's hoping for a "zero tariff situation" between the United States and Europe. Musk's vision of a free trade zone comes only days after Trump unveiled a plan to tariff some of America's largest trading partners, including a 20% tariff on the EU.

He was investigated by the Secret Service after a post in September

After the second assassination attempt on Trump, Musk replied to the question “Why they want to kill Donald Trump?” on X with “And no one is even trying to assassinate Biden/Kamala” alongside several question marks. Musk deleted the post, calling it a joke, but the Secret Service didn’t think it was funny, saying records were “compiled for law enforcement purposes.”

April 2 - Could take a step back from US government involvement

According to insiders in the Trump administration, President Trump has told his inner circle that Musk may take on more of a supporting role in government, and return to his businesses by late May or early June. Many are viewing Musk’s unpredictability as a political liability, as was demonstrated when his handpicked conservative judge lost a bid for a Wisconsin Supreme Court. While Trump has said he is pleased with Musk’s performance and the DOGE initiative, this is a stark shift in their relationship, when it appeared Musk was “here to stay”.

He joined Trump on stage for the first time

In October of 2024, when Trump returned to Butler, Pennsylvania—the site where he survived an assassination attempt a few months prior—Musk joined him on stage. This marked the first time he was present at one of Trump’s rallies. Musk called Trump the only candidate “to preserve democracy in America” and said “this will be the last election” if Trump doesn’t win.

March 29 - Sells X to his own startup company

Musk has finally listened to the growing calls for him to sell X - formerly Twitter - but the bad news is that he sold it to himself. Musk has essentially merged X with his AI startup company xAI in a $33 billion all-stock deal. Since both X and xAI are privately held, they're not required to disclose their finances to the public. While Musk claims the deal values xAI at $80 billion and X at $33 billion, it's unclear if the sale will change anything for X users.

He was named by Trump to co-lead DOGE

After Trump won the 2024 presidential election, he named Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead the new Department of Government Efficiency. Musk will provide “advice and guidance” outside of government and “drive large-scale structural reform,” according to Trump. The DOGE name is a nod to Musk’s love for Dogecoin, the cryptocurrency with a Shiba Inu mascot.

He is reportedly planning to support Nigel Farage

Musk’s kingmaker persona might be heading overseas. In December 2024, The Times reported that he is planning to donate $100 million to Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party ahead of the next UK election. Musk could route the funds through X’s UK branch in order to bypass donation laws, with the goal of helping Farage become Prime Minister.

Days before the fiercely contested state Supreme Court election closed in Wisconsin, Musk plans to "personally hand over" $1 million to two voters, in a similar fashion as his PAC ran last November in several battleground states. The election - which has become a proxy battle over the politics of the entire United States - will determine whether Wisconsin's highest court will remain under liberal control by a 4-3 margin or flip to a conservative majority.

March 27 – Elon Musk claims “almost no one” has been fired by DOGE

Amidst the Department of Government Efficiency's efforts to slash spending, Musk is downplaying the amount of federal employee jobs lost. He told Fox News that "almost no one" in the federal government has been fired, a comment made after a DOGE staffer told Fox host Bret Baier that very few federal workers had received so-called reduction-in-force notices. Despite these claims, the Department of Health and Human Services recently announced it plans to cut 10,000 full-time jobs as part of DOGE's efforts.

March 25 - Attends Cabinet meeting in new pro-Trump hat

Musk was in attendance for Donald Trump’s third known meeting with Cabinet secretaries, in which his DOGE cost-cutting initiatives were praised as being effective. Musk was seen wearing a red hat with the phrase “Trump Was Right About Everything” on it, and reportedly claimed during the meeting that the Small Business Association had discovered a loan awarded to a “very precocious” baby.

March 15 - Announces first mission to Mars for 2026

Musk has declared that his Starship rocket will head to Mars by the end of next year. If initial missions go well, he says human landings could begin as early as 2029, though “2031 is more likely.” The 123 metre (403 ft.) long rocket—the largest ever created—has suffered multiple failures in tests, including an explosion minutes after it was launched from Texas earlier in the year.

March 14 - Reposts “deeply disturbing” message on X

Musk took time away from cutting thousands of federal workers with DOGE to repost a message on X that read: “Stalin, Mao, and Hitler didn’t murder millions of people. Their public sector employees did.” The now-deleted repost comparing federal workers to three of the most notorious killers of the media era drew a furious response: the Anti-Defamation League called it “deeply disturbing and irresponsible.”

March 10 - Calls Mark Kelly a “traitor”

When Democrat Sen. Mark Kelly announced on X that he had returned from his third trip to Ukraine, where he’d gone to visit a military hospital and speak with injured service members, Musk replied, “You are a traitor.” The former Navy pilot and astronaut was quick to hit back, addressing Musk directly: “Elon, if you don’t understand that defending freedom is a basic tenet of what makes America great and keeps us safe, maybe you should leave it to those of us who do.”

March 10 - Claims X was victim of cyberattack

After a series of outages rendered social media platform X unavailable to thousands of users, Musk claimed it was being targeted in a “massive cyberattack.” In a post, he stated that a “large, coordinated group and/or a country” was responsible, later saying that the attackers had “IP addresses originating in the Ukraine area.” Cybersecurity experts were quick to clarify that the IPs were from worldwide locations, not just Ukraine.

March 3 - Might be kicked out of Royal Society

While Musk has been welcomed by the White House, it appears another exclusive group is about ready to push him out. The Royal Society—the world's oldest scientific academy—convened to discuss Musk’s potential breaches of their code of conduct, specifically his spreading of “unfounded conspiracy theories.” More than 2,400 people signed the open letter calling on the Royal Society to eject Musk, though a decision has not yet been made to revoke his membership.

March 1 - Sees Tesla stock plummet

Musk’s foray into politics has done him no favours when it comes to his car company Tesla. While it enjoyed a massive boost following Trump’s election—hitting a closing high of $479.86 in mid-December—the electric automaker has lost nearly all of those gains. February 2025 was Tesla’s second-worst month on record, as it lost nearly 28% of its stock price, a figure only eclipsed by a 37% loss in December 2022.
