Max Verstappen silenced the home fans at the British Grand Prix by seeing off McLaren duo Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris to put his Red Bull on pole position at Silverstone.
Verstappen did not look to be in the hunt for first place, but he pulled a brilliant lap out of the bag to beat Piastri by 0.103 seconds with Norris third, 0.118 seconds adrift.
George Russell took fourth for Mercedes, one place ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who had dared to dream of a first pole position for Ferrari, but ended up two tenths off the pace. Charles Leclerc qualified sixth in the other Ferrari.
Verstappen was only fourth after the opening runs in Q3 at a gusty and overcast Silverstone, and complained his Red Bull was difficult to drive. However, when it mattered most the four-time world champion came from nowhere to take top spot - his first pole since Miami at the beginning of May.

Charles Leclerc loses cool in foul-mouthed radio rant at British Grand Prix
Saturday 5 July 2025 19:12 , Olivia HicksCharles Leclerc swore repeatedly in a fiery outburst over team radio as his frustration boiled over after qualifying at the British Grand Prix.
The Ferrari driver had earlier in the day been the quickest on track in the final practice session and was a contender for pole position at Silverstone
But the Monegasque could only record the sixth-quickest time in Q3, triggering a foul-mouthed rant over radio.
“F*** that,” he said. “I am so f****** s***. So f****** s*** I am. I am so f****** s***. That’s all I am.”
Hamilton says he's "gelling a lot better" with race engineer, but doesn't know what to expect on Sunday
Saturday 5 July 2025 18:45 , Olivia HicksAfter qualifying fifth on Saturday ahead of the weekend’s feature race, nine-time British Grand Prix winner Lewis Hamilton said he was “pleased with the progress and with the direction.”

"My engineer and I have been really gelling a lot better in terms of how we set the car up, and I'm much happier in the car. The lap was really nice right up until the last corner, I had a little bit of understeer. I don't know if it was the kerb, but I just lost it. It cost me just over a tenth so that would definitely have put me on the front row.”
Ferrari was expected to be the one to beat this weekend. Instead, both red cars had a disappointing Q3 performance.
"I don't know [what to expect in the race]. I've got four really fast cars ahead,” the British driver said in anticipation of tomorrow’s race.
Max Verstappen beats Britons to the punch with shock pole at Silverstone
Saturday 5 July 2025 18:24 , Olivia HicksThe special one was in town. Strolling with his usual swagger across the pit-lane, Jose Mourinho was on ceremonial duties on Saturday in handing over the Pirelli pole position award at a murky Silverstone circuit. Yet rather appropriately, Mourinho gifted the prize to F1’s very own special one, who gave a firm reminder as to what all the current fuss is about.
Max Verstappen, in typical 2025 fashion, expertly sprung from nowhere at the end of qualifying to take top spot in front of an, ultimately, disappointed British crowd. Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton had appeared genuine favourites beforehand, given their fine form in practice, but they will line up third and fifth. Oscar Piastri, the championship leader, starts in P2.
An image of Verstappen’s print media session on Thursday has been doing the rounds online in recent days, with throngs of journalists crowding around the Dutchman, sitting nonchalantly at a table in Red Bull’s ‘Energy Station’ motorhome. Not an uncommon occurrence, but more notable than ever this week given the speculation surrounding his future at Red Bull. Rumours he shut down a day later, insisting he has no intention of joining Mercedes in 2026.
"Quali used to be one of my strengths," Leclerc says post-quali
Saturday 5 July 2025 18:15 , Olivia Hicks“I haven’t been good enough,” Charles Leclerc said post-qualifying on Saturday. “I ended up P6 instead of front row, I can only blame myself. Quali used to be one of my strengths, I’m performing well in races but in qualifying I’m missing something. We have some issues with the car but it’s not an excuse.
“I wanted to work on the quali pace to make it better than sixth. I’ll try my best.”

“Just Q1 was the only little nervous one just with how close it was from the front to last, really. So, otherwise I think, yeah, all good. Most laps always improved and found good lap time. Probably just my final one, I would have hoped to find just that little bit more but just didn't quite get the grip out of it in some corners and the right balance. But I'm still happy with the third.
As the lights go out tomorrow, Norris is "expecting a tough but an exciting race,” as he battles with Verstappen and his teammate in lap one.

Saturday 5 July 2025 17:20 , Olivia HicksHaas’ Ollie Bearman was hit with a 10-place grid penalty on Saturday after ignoring red flag procedures.
“It sucks, quite honestly. It’s horrible, I can only blame myself, silly error, my fault,” he said. “I’m really happy we had a good qualifying to validate the team’s hard work with the upgrade. Now to be in Q3 with a lot of high speed is a great feeling.”
On the red flag incident he said: “We were doing a very slow lap under the red flag, going into pit entry with very cold tyres and I didn’t account for that – a silly dumb error. I lost it. Silly and really kicking myself, let’s learn from it.”
Russell post-quali: "Anything other than sunshine"
Saturday 5 July 2025 17:05 , Olivia HicksGeorge Russell, who finished fourth ahead of Lewis Hamilton, shared his thoughts post-qualifying session on Saturday.
“Very happy, we’ve been off the pace all weekend. I was not expecting to be in the fight for a good position,” the British driver said. “My last lap really came alive, mega strong, to be 20 milliseconds behind the front row is a good result.”
When asked where his main battle is this weekend, Russell said: “A bit everywhere to be honest. Recent form shows we probably won’t be the strongest tomorrow but looking a bit cooler, it can go anyway. We have to be alert to it.”
The Mercedes driver is hoping for “anything other than sunshine, which is a shame to say! I was really happy with that. It’s been a tough weekend for the pace.”
Zak Brown on Verstappen-Mercedes rumors: "There's something going on there"

Watch Bearman's penalty-inducing FP3 moment
Saturday 5 July 2025 14:15 , Olivia HicksBearman hit with 10-place grid penalty ahead of Sunday's British GP
Saturday 5 July 2025 14:11 , Olivia HicksOllie Bearman has been handed a 10-place grid penalty for Sunday’s British Grand Prix after crashing in red flag conditions in practice.
The 20-year-old, competing in his first F1 home race, lost control of his Haas car upon entering the pit-lane in the final practice session on Saturday.
Bearman’s car spun into the wall, though he did manage to drive it back to his garage.
However, given the incident took place in red flag conditions where car control is paramount, the stewards have dished out a severe penalty for Bearman’s race on Sunday.
The Haas driver also received four penalty points, taking his total up to eight. Twelve in one year triggers a race ban.
The British GP through the years: Get to know your Silverstone history
Saturday 5 July 2025 14:09 , Olivia HicksWith just under an hour to go until qualifying, here are some quick facts ahead of the highly-anticipated session:
- Silverstone participated in the first F1 championship round in 1950, where King George VI was in attendance.
- Ten different Formula 1 drivers from Great Britain have won on home soil.
- Lewis Hamilton holds the record for the most pole positions and most wins, seven and nine respectively.
- There’s a pretty high chance of a safety car being deployed here (88 percent), especially with the rainy weather characteristic of the track. However, the chance of a Virtual Safety Car is low — only 13 percent.
Stay tuned for more updates ahead of qualifying. Start time is 15:00 local time.
Can Hamilton do it again?
Saturday 5 July 2025 13:55 , Olivia HicksLewis Hamilton won this time last year in Silverstone in an emotional fight to the checkered flag, 1.4 seconds ahead of rival driver Max Verstappen.
But a question looms ahead of this weekend: Can he do it again?
Last year’s top four looks a lot like this year’s (minus Charles Leclerc). In 2024, both McLarens finished third and fourth with Oscar Piastri trailing behind Lando Norris.
With just 15 points separating Piastri from Norris, the latter will attempt to use his hometown advantage and leap ahead in the standings.
If Hamilton can pull through to the front of the grid, he will gain vital points in Ferrari’s battle to compete with the best.

Lewis Hamilton returns to Silverstone in last chance saloon for first Ferrari year
Saturday 5 July 2025 13:26 , Olivia HicksIf you’d told Lewis Hamilton four months ago, amid the hoopla of Formula One’s biggest-ever driver move, that he would be “hoping and praying” for a strong result at his beloved Silverstone, he’d likely have laughed you out of the room. Either that or he’d have rolled his eyes. Take your pick.
After all, this was the seven-time F1 world champion moving to the fabled Ferrari. A driver in need of rejuvenation after three years of frustration at Mercedes was joining a team seemingly on the up, having come within a whisker of last year’s constructors’ title. Everything seemed perfectly aligned. With the whole world watching, what could possibly go wrong?
Well, come race 12 and the halfway stage of the 2025 season, the answer is unavoidable: pretty much everything.
Just under two hours until qualifying begins
Saturday 5 July 2025 13:12 , Olivia HicksGet your popcorn ready because in just under two hours, a fast-paced show will begin on the big screen.
Four teams threaten to take first place away as Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull and Mercedes shave the margins separating them from one another.
The big question remains: Who will take pole?
Will it be George Russell bringing hope for his future and shutting down Verstappen-to-Mercedes rumors? Will it be Lando Norris as he attempts to shrink the championship points between his teammate ahead? Will it be Lewis Hamilton turning nine wins at Silverstone into 10?
Or will it be a sneaky, unexpected outlier?
Find out as the qualifying action starts at 15:00 local time.
Tsunoda stuns with FP3 performance
Saturday 5 July 2025 13:03 , Olivia HicksRed Bull’s second seat is no easy feat for any driver. With constant comparisons to Max Verstappen and a revolving door of drivers thrown in and out of the spot, the No. 2 role is just as career-ending as it is career-making.
However, Yuki Tsunoda found some rhythm this weekend with floor updates and a fresh pace. The Japanese driver rounded out FP3 with a fifth-place finish, 0.519 seconds behind his teammate. It was a clear improvement from 15th in Friday’s FP2 session.
Tsunoda is set up to have a better performance than last weekend. At the Austrian GP, the Red Bull driver didn’t make it out of Q1 in quali, lined up P18 for the start and was slapped with a 10-second time penalty. He ended the race in last place.
The good news for Tsunoda is that it seems he can only go up from here.

McLaren on top in FP3 with change of pace
Saturday 5 July 2025 12:21 , Olivia HicksOne-thousandth of a second separates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris in first and second as FP3 winds down.

"Wanting more," Williams team principal Vowles says
Saturday 5 July 2025 11:54 , Olivia HicksJames Vowles, Williams’ team principal, gave some insight into what is going on within the team garage this weekend. Vowles said the team was “interrupted” yesterday as Williams attempted to work through a handful of issues from Austria.
Despite the interruptions, Vowles remains as hopeful as ever, saying he was happy with FP2. Alex Albon just missed out on a top 10 FP2 finish on Friday.
The historic British team is still aiming for more with the team principal wanting a top-10 finish this weekend.
“Proud of where we are as a team and looking forward to our future,” Vowles said.

Saturday 5 July 2025 11:37 , Olivia HicksSo far this British Grand Prix F1 weekend, British drivers have shown up and out at home. FP3 set to be a weather test for Mercedes
Saturday 5 July 2025 11:25 , Olivia HicksGeorge Russell said the team’s race pace this weekend will be defined by weather conditions as the wind picks up and clouds cover the track.
Warm track temperatures on Friday prevented the team from pulling ahead and ending up on top.
"It's a little bit frustrating for us that every single week we are at the mercy of the weather, and we need to improve that,” Russell said ahead of the third free practice this British Grand Prix weekend.

Max Verstappen ‘clear’ about ending his F1 career in a Red Bull, says team boss
Saturday 5 July 2025 10:40 , Harry Latham-CoyleChristian Horner said Max Verstappen has made it clear that he wants to end his Formula One career in a Red Bull amid interest from rivals’ Mercedes.
Verstappen’s future is under scrutiny ahead of this weekend’s British Grand Prix with Red Bull under-performing and Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff making moves for the Dutchman.
George Russell is out of contract at the end of the year but the Englishman is extremely confident he will be retained, while his team-mate, rookie Italian teenager Kimi Antonelli, also believes he will drive for Mercedes in 2026.
Verstappen has a deal with Red Bull which runs until 2028, although a performance clause could activate an early release. Verstappen is third in the world championship, 61 points title leader Oscar Piastri.
However, Horner said: “Max has a contract until 2028, and he has made it quite clear that he would like to finish his career in a Red Bull car, from start to finish. That is something which is unique and special to him.
“Max has been with Red Bull since the start of his career, his success has come with Red Bull, he is a big part of our team and he has a great deal of faith in the team and the people around him.
“So, while there is always speculation and noise we all sit fairly comfortably with where we are at, and what the situation is.
“In any driver’s contract there are performance clauses, and that exists for Max, too, but his intention is that he will be driving for us in 2026. The most important thing is the clarity that exists between Max and the team and that is very clear.”

Russell, who is in the middle of his fourth season with Mercedes, does not currently have a contract beyond 2025 despite a strong first half of the season.
Four-time F1 world champion Verstappen has long been courted by Mercedes boss Toto Wolff and reports in Italian media this week state that the Dutchman is open to the prospect of joining the Silver Arrows next year. Russell revealed last week that Mercedes are in discussions with Verstappen.
But Russell, who is in the midst of his first campaign without Lewis Hamilton as his teammate, insists he is unconcerned.

American Mayer announces candidacy for FIA president
Saturday 5 July 2025 10:00 , Jack RathbornAmerican Tim Mayer announced on Friday that he would stand against incumbent Mohammed Ben Sulayem in a December vote for president of the FIA, motorsport's world governing body.
The 59-year-old, a former Formula One steward and son of former McLaren principal Teddy Mayer, left the FIA last November.
He said then that he had been fired via text message by an assistant to Ben Sulayem. The FIA dispute that he was sacked by text.
"What I see is a failure in leadership right now," he told a press conference at a hotel near the British Grand Prix circuit Silverstone, adding that he had been working on his campaign for six months.
He described his bid as a Herculean task with the deck stacked in Ben Sulayem's favour, given recent statute changes, and only five months to campaign and win votes from member federations. Mayer did not say who would be on his presidential list, a requirement for standing, which he admitted still had some open positions.
He said he had good support from Motorsport UK and had informed Stefano Domenicali, chief executive of Liberty Media-owned Formula One, of his plans.
"The job now is to go out and explain to lots of small clubs around the world ... why we can do a better job," said Mayer. "Explaining how we can bring value and restructure the FIA to do a better job. I do feel restructuring needs to happen."
Christian Horner backs Yuki Tsunoda to keep seat for remainder of 2025 F1 season
Saturday 5 July 2025 09:45 , Jack RathbornChristian Horner says Yuki Tsunoda will get the rest of 2025 to show he deserves to keep a seat at Red Bull, but signaled he'd consider a range of options inside and outside the wider Red Bull organization, including Liam Lawson and his rookie Racing Bulls teammate Isack Hadjar.
Tsunoda was promoted to Verstappen's teammate in March after Lawson struggled in the first two races.
"Yuki has got until the end of the season to demonstrate that he's the guy to remain in the car," Horner said. "We have Isack also doing a good job and Liam finding his form as well. So within the Red Bull pool we have talent. Of course, you're also open to what is outside of that. We want to field the best lineup that we can for next year. We've gone outside of that pool in recent years. If we feel the necessity to do so, we wouldn't be afraid to do so again."
Lando Norris reacts to fast FP2
Saturday 5 July 2025 09:33 , Jack RathbornLando Norris lapped fastest ahead of the Ferraris in British Grand Prix practice on Friday as an army of McLaren Formula One fans, many cheering from a sold-out 'Landostand', got what they wanted to see.
The Briton was top of the second session with a best effort of one minute 25.816 seconds, with Charles Leclerc 0.222 slower and Lewis Hamilton 0.301 off the pace after going quickest in the first practice.
"I think we have a bit of work to do, to be honest," said Norris. "It looks maybe a bit too good today, like always.
"Ferrari always catch up into P3 (final practice) like they did last weekend so I’d say I'm pleased with today but nothing to be too proud about just yet."
