Superman is alive. This photo shows a dog named Superman, who was found alone on a large pile of debris after being swept away from his home during the devastating floods in Central Texas last week.

Fearful and exhausted, the dog was reluctant to trust the search and rescue crews who found him, barking and biting as they attempted to save him. With a little bit of patience and dog-whispering, volunteers were eventually able to earn his trust and remove him to safety.

Tragically, Superman’s person perished in the flood. His surviving family, who have lost everything, are planning on holding on to the dog, but while they get back on their feet, they needed a little help. Faster than a speeding bullet, animal shelter Austin Pets Alive! found a temporary foster family for Superman to stay with in the meantime.

Austin Pets Alive! has taken in over 100 pets from Williamson County and Kerr County shelters, allowing the facilities to accommodate pets lost or injured in the floods. The shelter has also established a veterinary hospital in Kerrville, Texas, and has sent out rescue teams to search the area around the Guadalupe River for animals still in need of assistance.

At least 109 people are now confirmed dead across six counties in central Texas, surpassing the death toll from historic flooding brought on by Hurricane Helene. That death toll makes this tragedy the deadliest rainfall-driven flash flood in the U.S. since 1976.
