Locals in a regional Aussie town have enjoyed a "magical" start to their weekend as serious snow dumped, allowing residents to build snowmen and even hit the slopes at a local golf course. And the weather bureau is saying there is more white stuff to come today for the region.

Residents in the small town of Guyra, on the Northern Tablelands in the New England region of NSW with a population of just over 2,000 people, have shared their delight this morning to waking up in a wintery wonderland.

Many residents took to social media to show the incredible state of the town as more and more snow built up throughout the morning, with some warning of slippery conditions on the road.

"Significant snow event occurring due to the cold pool moving along the edge of the region," weather photographer Chris McFerran said at 11.30am this morning, sharing videos of the heavy falls.

"How beautiful is all the snow!" remarked one resident.

While predictions earlier in the week about snow appearing in a vast majority of Aussie states this weekend didn't materialise, those at a high enough elevation in northern NSW certainly didn't miss out.

"As rain combines with cold air through north-east New South Wales today, snow is a risk in areas which don't usually see it," the Bureau of Meteorology warned late on Saturday morning.

"Through parts of the Northern Tablelands, above 1000-1200 metres in elevation, rain is likely to fall as snow on Saturday. This includes areas around Guyra and Armidale, which have already seen snow falling through Saturday morning."

The Bureau said some areas could experience as much as 30 centimetres by the end of the day.

"Moderate snowfalls are forecast across the Northern Tablelands, with as much as 20-30 cm possible in some areas. Flurries of snow may be seen as low as 800 meters in the region, which may bring impacts for major roads," it said.

"Snow flurries are possible further north, across the higher peaks of the Granite Belt in southern Queensland."

However it appears residents north of the border had no problem jumping in the car and heading to where the action was. That included Ipswich councillor Paul Tully who drove south with members of his family in the early hours of Saturday in hopes of seeing some snow.

"We're all crazy, we came up this morning," he said in a video alongside other residents, posted to his social media from Northern NSW.

Located on a volcanic uplift, Guyra is about 1,330 metres above sea level making it one of the country's highest towns. By comparison, the ski fields at Perisher Valley are a little more than 1,700 metres above sea level while Thredbo village is only about 100 metres higher than Guyra. So it's certainly not uncommon for the place to get a good dusting.

Those in lower lying areas in the state were bracing for more wet weather today, with the worst of it to end by Sunday.

"The rain and the wind is expected to peak today with the Mid North Coast, the Upper Hunter and parts of the Northern Tablelands likely to get the heaviest falls," BoM meteorologist Helen Reid said.

A severe weather warning was in place for parts of the Upper Hunter, Mid North Coast, Northern Tablelands and the North West slopes and plains for heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and damaging wind gusts in excess of 90 kilometres an hour.

Meanwhile a separate cold front is moving across Western Australia bringing rain, thunderstorms and possible hail. A severe weather warning for damaging winds and heavy rainfall is in place for areas around Perth, Bunbury and Albany.
