The best rangehoods to make your kitchen fresh and stylish

When you think about renovating or updating parts of your kitchen, rangehoods probably aren’t the first, second or even third thing on your list. But the best rangehood can make a huge difference in the look and feel of your kitchen, keeping it free from smoke and cooking smells as well as potentially offering another source of light.

Some rangehoods can even become a focal point of your kitchen design, while others can blend into the background – even when the exhaust fan is on.

“A rangehood can truly be a statement piece in your kitchen. Many world-leading brands now offer customisation options to suit your kitchen’s style, from unique shapes and finishes to powder-coated colours,” Winnings product expert Karl Mellington tells Better Homes & Gardens.

“The possibilities are endless when it comes to form, but function is equally important. A rangehood should be both quiet and powerful enough to effectively remove smoke and odours. If it doesn’t meet these standards, it often ends up being used only for its lights.”

Rangehood installer and founder of Perth Rangehoods, Neil Tilbury, said he recommends his clients choose “the best performing rangehood that also fits the aesthetics of their kitchen or alfresco design”.

“When I say best performing rangehood, I mean the amount of air the appliance can remove from the cooking location. This is typically measured in cubic metres per hour (CMH), or cubic feet per minute (CFM).”

Schweigen Silent Cassette Rangehood 120cm.

Best for: uninterrupted kitchen views

With installation directly into your ceiling or bulkhead, this type of rangehood is most suited to kitchens that are undergoing major renovations – and have a budget to match. But they are a stylish choice for island bench cooktops and households where you don’t want a rangehood to be a focal point.

Schweigen’s German-engineered Isodrive motor is designed for quiet, efficient extraction of steam, smoke and odours to leave your kitchen fresher for longer. It also comes with high-performance safety ducting that’s fire, pest and crush-proof, guaranteed for life.

“We are very happy with the cassette [rangehood]. It works very well and is super quiet. In fact it works so well and because it is ceiling mounted we use it not just when cooking but also to extract the hot air out of the room which is great in summer but not so good if you are heating the room so in winter when we use it sparingly when cooking, that’s not a bad thing, we just never considered that aspect,” one customer shared in a detailed review on Google, where the few customers who have reviewed it all gave 5-star ratings.

Colours: Stainless steel

Key features:

  • Ceiling casette rangehood
  • Four speed settings with remote control
  • Maximum 3200 cubic metres per hour extraction
  • Comes with high performance safety ducting
  • 10-year warranty on silent Isodrive systems, 3-year warranty on canopies and lifetime warranty on filters
  • Requires specialised installation, including hardwiring to a switch by an electrician (switch not provided)

Three tips to help you choose the best rangehood for your kitchen

Just as there are many different kitchen designs, there are many different types of rangehoods on the market. So here are three tips that can help you choose the right one for your home.

1. Factor it in as early as possible

“Unfortunately, rangehoods are often overlooked and not prioritised like other appliances including ovens, cooktops, fridges, and sinks,” Winnings product expert Karl Mellington says. “Investing in a quality rangehood from the start, will allow you to cook anything without worrying about mess or lingering smells.”

So if you’re renovating your kitchen or just the cooking area, thinking about the rangehood from the start means you can choose one that suits the rest of the design, as well as your budget.

Does the width of the cooktop matter when choosing the rangehood size?

Yes, and this is another reason to factor the rangehood into your plans as early as possible.

“Typically the width of the rangehood should cover the cook top area,” Perth Rangehoods founder Neil Tilbury explains. “If a 90cm cook top is being installed then a 90cm rangehood should be installed. The same is true for a 60cm cook top and rangehood kitchen design.”

2. Think about your cooking habits

If you or someone else in the household regularly cooks up a storm, investing a rangehood with strong air flow capacity will help keep steam and smells from lingering. But if you’re more of a light-hand (or tend to use the oven more), the noise levels or cost might be more of a priority.

3. Look at different types of rangehoods

Canopy and under-cupboard or integrated rangehoods are two of the most familiar styles, including those that slide out when they’re in use.

But ceiling cassette rangehoods might be worth considering if you’re planning a major renovation. There are also fixed rangehoods that can cover a wider cooking area, and downdraft rangehoods that rise up from behind the cooktop when their in use (but typically don’t have as much air extraction power as other models).

With so many design variations, it’s worth checking out a few different styles and options to decide on what look, feel and features you want to prioritise – which is why we’ve included a few options in our list.

What is the quietest rangehood?

“If customers don’t like noisy rangehoods then an ‘off board’ fan is a great option, as the fan is mounted inside the roof space, or even on the roof of the home,” Perth Rangehood’s founder Neil Tilbury said. “Sometimes manufacturers coin the phrase ‘silent rangehood’ for off board fan rangehood designs. That said, off board fan designs are more expensive than the more common ‘on board’ fan rangehood designs.”

Another option is to check the specifications for different rangehoods for noise levels, which are measured in decibels (dB or dBA). To give you an idea, 60 decibels is considered normal conversation, a vacuum cleaner could be around 75 decibels and a lawn mower around 85 decibels, according to safeenvironments.com.au. So a rangehood with noise levels around 60 decibels means you could have a conversation while cooking, but lower levels will be quieter.

Are undermount rangehoods effective?

Undermount rangehoods, which are set into kitchen cabinetry, are a popular choice because of their discrete appearance and can be effective based on their design and the installation process.

“Undermount rangehoods can be effective,” Neil says, adding that “past designs, and poor workmanship may have given sub par performance in removing cooking air from kitchens and alfresco areas due to how they were installed.”

“Rangehood performance isn’t just down to the amount of air it can remove, it’s where the air ends up. If a rangehood is connected to a duct and a flue or external wall vent, so the cooking air can terminate to outside the building they will be more effective at removing cooking air from cooking areas.”

Neil told Better Homes & Gardens that rangehoods installed before 2022 could be less effective as the National Construction Code (NCC) “did not specify that rangehoods needed to be ducted to outside air, so installers would connect a duct (or not) and run it into a void or a roof space.”

“This would result in blockages over time, pest problems, and cooking smells entering other rooms through ceiling vents throughout the home,” he says. But updates since then mean that “all bathroom fans, laundry fans and rangehoods must now be ducted to outside air.”

How to maintain your rangehood

Ideally, a rangehood should be something you buy once and then don’t think about updating for decades. So to keep it working to the best of its abilities, Karl says “regular filter cleaning is essential.”

“I recommend washing the filters in the dishwasher at a high temperature without detergent, as dishwasher tabs can be damaging and corrosive. Other options include using vinegar and bicarb or soaking the filters in warm soapy water.”

How we select the best rangehoods on this list

The Better Homes & Gardens team has collectively assessed a wide selection of rangehoods and reviewed details about the technology to develop a clear set of criteria for our top picks. We regularly review the rangehoods on the market, then narrow it down to ones available with our partners and consider the following essential criteria:

  • Performance and performance-related features
  • Efficiency, including air flow/extraction rates (cubic metres per hour)
  • Warranty coverage and maintenance
  • Design and size
  • Reviews, including our own hands-on experiences when possible
  • Other notable features or elements, such as noise levels

We also consider different price-points, sales and availability of stock to help ensure you can get the rangehood you want.
