  • At 252 feet long, the U-505 is nearly as long as a city block. It is also 31 feet and 6 inches tall., Atop the submarine sits the conning tower, used for navigation, protection, and observation., Bullet holes can be seen all over the conning tower., German crewmembers honored their captains by adopting and painting unofficial emblems on the conning tower., The first stop on my tour was the petty officer's quarters., The submarine had four 21-inch torpedo tubes in the bow and two in the stern., Next, I walked past a narrow hallway and saw the galley sandwiched between other sleeping quarters., When the U-505 was on patrol, it carried 12 tons of food., In 1995, 50 years after the U-505 was captured, museum staff found a loaf of canned bread in the submarine., The crew had to navigate various challenges while underwater, including high temperatures., In their free time, the crew entertained themselves by listening to records or playing cards., Next, we stopped by the radio room, the U-boat's main connection with the outside world., The control room had a dizzying number of switches, wires, and valves, which were used to control the ship's direction., All calculations before firing a torpedo were done with pen and paper., The US Navy captured the U-505 on June 4, 1944., Upon detecting the US Navy's presence, the German submarine dove deeper into the ocean., Then, a depth charge hit the submarine, spinning it closer to crash depth., Once the sub resurfaced, the crew was out of luck because US forces surrounded them., To prevent the U-505's capture, the Germans tried one last trick., Our last stop on the tour was the electric motor room, with a pit stop to see the sea strainer valve., At the end of the tour, I learned how the submarine found its way to Chicago., On September 2, 1954, the submarine was hauled across Lake Shore Drive in Chicago., At first, the submarine was displayed outside the museum., Exiting the U-505 exhibit, I was amazed by the life crewmembers had lived on board., I toured the only remaining German submarine captured by the US during World War II.   • My tour began in the plant's modern main lobby., The Metaplant site consists of 11 buildings totalling 7.5 million square feet of space., Here's a Hyundai XCIENT hydrogen fuel cell semi truck used to transport parts and supplies to the factory., The production process starts in the stamping shop, where sheet metal is cut and stamped into parts that will make up the frame of the car., Stamped parts are transported by automated guided vehicles, or AGVs., The stamped metal panels are then stored in these massive racks., Here are parts of the Ioniq 9, Hyundai's new flagship three-row EV SUV., The next part of the tour is the welding shop., The work done by the welding robots is then inspected by the plant's human employees known as Meta Pros., There are employee meeting and break areas located along the inspection and assembly areas., In addition to human eyes, the vehicles are also inspected by a pair of Boston Dynamics robot dogs called Spot., After the inspections are complete, a robot loads the partially assembled vehicles onto a conveyor system., Unfortunately, my tour did not get access to the paint shop due to concerns that outside visitors may compromise the quality of the paint application., Here, the painted bodies are married with their battery packs and skateboard chassis., The vehicles' interiors are then assembled by hand., Partially assembled EVs are shuttled through from area to area by the automated robots., Assembled vehicles are loaded onto different AGVs that navigate the facility by reading the QR codes embedded into the floor., At the end of the assembly line, completed EVs are put through their paces at the on-site test track before being sent to the vehicle preparation center, or VPC, to get them ready for shipping., Hyundai just built a $7.6 billion EV factory in Georgia to compete with Tesla and GM — see inside
