Vance Boelter, the man suspected of assassinating one Minnesota lawmaker and shooting another over the weekend, is in police custody, ending a near two-day manhunt, described as the largest in state history.
Boelter, 57, was arrested Sunday and stands accused of fatally shooting Democratic state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, as well as wounding Democratic state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife at their respective homes on Saturday morning.
Law enforcement agencies spent nearly 48 hours searching for Boelter, reportedly an evangelical Christian with a checkered employment history, with more than 100 agents deployed across the state.
On Sunday, police located the suspect’s vehicle on the side of the highway in Sibley County, where officials said they found valuable evidence.
He was later cornered in local woodland, surrendered to officers and was arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree murder and two of attempted murder.
Boelter’s longtime friend and roommate described him as “very conservative” and opposed to abortion and said the suspect had returned to their home and texted him on the morning after the attacks.

Shootings in Minnesota follow a season of deadly political violence in America
11:30 , Joe SommerladThe attacks in Minnesota are part of a wave of recent violence in the U.S. thought to be motivated by politics.
Recent months have also seen the assassination of United Healthcare’s CEO, twin explosions on New Year’s Day, the fatal shooting of Israeli embassy staff, the firebombing of Jewish activists in Colorado and at least two attempts on Donald Trump’s life.
The same day as the shootings took place, a man was accidentally fatally shot during a “No Kings” protest in Utah, after security personnel tried to stop a different allegedly armed man from attacking demonstrators.
Here’s Josh Marcus on that incident.
Video of suspect delivering anti-trans sermon in Africa resurfaces
11:00 , Joe SommerladBoelter, a born again Christian, can be seen speaking at a religious conference in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2023 and claiming that some people in the United States “don’t know what sex they are.”
Law enforcement disputes 'manifesto' characterization
10:30 , Alex WoodwardDrew Evans, superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, told reporters on Sunday that suspected gunman Vance Boelter didn’t leave behind “a traditional manifesto."
He said the document was more like “a notebook, with a lot of lawmakers and others that are listed in there, and much more other thoughts that are throughout this, as opposed to a very succinct document.”
“I don’t want the public to have the impression that there's this long manifesto,” he said.
The comments were made prior to the suspect’s arrest.
Minnesota suspected shooter’s roommate claims he was ‘not as upbeat’ lately
10:00 , Joe SommerladBoelter’s longtime friend and roommate David described him as “very conservative” and opposed to abortion and said the suspect had returned to their home and texted him on the morning after the attacks.
“David and Ron, I love you guys. I’ve made some choices and you guys don’t know anything about this, but I’m going to be gone for a while. I may be dead shortly. So I just want to let you know that I love you guys both. And wish it hand’s gone this way. I don’t want to say anything more, and implicate you in any way because you guys don’t know anything about this, but I love you guys and I’m sorry for all the trouble this has caused.”
He also revealed that Boelter had been unhappy and struggling for work since returning from a recent trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A woodland trail cam, infra-red and an abrupt surrender: More details on suspect’s capture emerge
09:31 , Joe SommerladThe Minneapolis Star Tribune has more details on the moments leading up to Vance Boelter’s capture in the woods of Sibley County.
Police had “hundreds” of detectives and 20 SWAT teams looking for Boelter in what has been described as the largest manhunt in Minnesota’s history but it was a local resident’s trail camera that finally picked him up, according to the Ramsey County sheriff.
Officers picked up the suspect’s trail after dark, necessitating the use of infra-red technology to locate him, alongside helicopters and drones.
Minnesota State Patrol Lt. Col. Jeremy Geiger said that officers called out to Boelter who, accepting he was cornered, “crawled to law enforcement teams and was placed under arrest at that point in time.”
No officers were hurt in the pursuit and the inter-agency co-operation involved has been praised.
Minnesota Department of Public Safety Superintendent Drew Evans said he believes Saturday morning’s attacks on lawmakers would have “continued throughout the day” if police at the time had not swiftly arrived at Hortman’s home, also expressing his confidence that Boelter acted alone.
Police have also revealed they discovered “at least three AK-47 assault rifles” and a handgun in the car Boelter left near Hortman’s home.
Boelter is scheduled to appear in court on Monday at 1.30pm, jail records show.

He knocked on the door and announced himself as a police officer before entering the house, the complaint says.
Officers were dispatched to the homes of other lawmakers, including to the home of Rep. Hortman in nearby Brooklyn Park.
When officers arrived at 3:55 a.m., they found a Ford SUV with “police style lights” and “immediately” recognized the suspect, according to the complaint.
