For $2.275 million, a Cape Cod church turned private residence
One of the Cape’s most historic churches is now a private residence on the market for $2.275 million.
Completed in 1833, the building was originally known as the Sandwich First Parish Unitarian Church. The Gothic Revival structure later became the Sandwich Doll Museum before being converted into a private residence in 1994. Now, it’s a five-bed, five-and-a-half bath home that combines the features of a chapel with modern living.

Measuring 7,270 square feet, 143 Main Street is located on the bustling main drag of Sandwich. Step inside the front doors and continue down a main hallway to a foyer, where you’ll find staircases on your right and left with a balcony above. The staircases lead up to the main part of the chapel, a vast space that conveys the architectural grandeur of the original structure. To the left is a stunning library filled with walls of built-in bookcases, while the kitchen is on the right. There, you’ll find bar seating, wooden cabinetry, and stainless steel appliances, including a Thermador stove. A second bar island provides additional seating.

“What’s really cool is, when you walk in there, depending on the time of day, it throws a different color because it’s tinted by the stained glass,” said Kate Pazakis of Cape Cod & Colonial Partners, who shares the listing with Thom Schoepfer.
A wrought iron staircase in the middle of the room leads down to the lower level. There, you’ll find a spacious room that previously served as an art gallery but could easily function as a family room. An elevator provides easy access. There are several bedrooms on the lower level.

Back in the main foyer, an additional staircase at the top of the first staircase on your left leads up to the primary level. There, you’ll find a private parlor overlooking Main Street with giant windows and cathedral ceilings. The primary bedroom space also has historic windows, a working corner fireplace, and two sets of French doors that open up to balconies over the first floor’s main chapel area. Right off the sleeping area is a spacious bathroom with a balcony of its own over the chapel area. There is also a roomy walk-in closet. A circular staircase from the private parlor leads up to the clock tower.

A two-car garage features direct entry to the home. There’s also a small alleyway behind the home that could be converted into a small patio area.
One of the greatest assets of the home is its prime location in Sandwich. Shawme Pond is just a block away, and the Sandwich Public Library is across the street.
