Former Air Force bomber pilot weighs in on U.S. strike on Iran

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - The U.S. attack on Iran’s nuclear sites over the weekend is being talked about all over the world.

KSLA’s Jeff Horchak sat down with a former U.S. Air Force bomber pilot who knows what it’s like to fly in combat missions. He gives his take on this massive military maneuver.

KSLA's Jeff Horchak sat down with former Air Force bomber pilot, Raymond Crews, to discuss the U.S. strike on Iran.

The U.S. air strike on Iran’s three nuclear sites this past weekend was carefully planned out. The surprise attack was designed to take away Iran’s nuclear facilities and capability of making nuclear weapons.

Nine B-2 American bombers made the long 37-hour roundtrip from the U.S. to Iran and back with one mission: to destroy their targets.

Raymond Crews served 17 years in the U.S. Air Force. He was a B-52 bomber pilot who flew in combat missions in Iraq and Afganistan. He says Operation Midnight Hammer was a complete success.

“Everything I heard about, it was textbook to have that many bombers take off. Seven went one way and three went the other. That’s 10 and we only have 19 B-2s,” Crews said. “That in itself is pretty impressive, having a mission being able to do that and not have a lot of bombers break down. I was impressed with that.”

“I think it was huge. So much talk about it, achievement. The goal is we have taken away the reason for Israel to be worried. Let’s take out those nuclear facilities and we hit every single one,” Crews said.

Each B-2 bomber costs more than $2 billion. According to Crews, this bomber was built specifically for missions like Midnight Hammer.

“It has the stealth aspect. Being relatively new, it can carry two GBUs in its bomb bays completely undetected. Takes a lot to pick that plane out the sky,” Crews said.

Global Strike Command is headquartered at Barksdale Air Force Base. That’s where the organized training and command for B-2 bombers takes place, making this huge military maneuver possible.

“Barksdale is important in this whole effort. They a great job. We think Barksdale is just B-52s here; it so much more than that. We don’t know all the communication that went on here, but they were heavily involved,” Crews explained.
