Powerful thunderstorms wreak havoc on RI, Mass.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Thunderstorms moving across Rhode Island and Massachusetts have brought heavy downpours, strong wind gusts and even penny-sized hail in some spots.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was in effect for parts of Bristol County, Kent County and Providence County but has since expired. The Severe Thunderstorm Watch is also no longer in effect.

12 News has received reports of downed trees and power lines, as well as localized street flooding and property damage, across the region.

The strong wind gusts also blew the roof off of a building at the corner of Pleasant Avenue and Clafin Street. The roof took down power lines and landed on a couple of parked cars below.

Bristol and East Providence waited for the storm to pass before setting off their fireworks. Both shows couldn’t be postponed to another day because the cases were already set up, and removing the ignition mechanism could endanger the workers if done so prematurely, according to the pyrotechnic professionals in charge of the displays.

East Providence set off its fireworks in quick succession just before 9 p.m. The entire display wound up lasting less than 10 minutes.

The situation was similar in North Kingstown. The town explained that, due to its agreement with the barge, the show must go on regardless of the weather.

Dozens of spectators huddled together inside Iggy’s Doughboys and Chowder House at Oakland Beach to wait out the storm before Warwick’s annual fireworks display.

The Power Outage Database notes that roughly 3,487 Rhode Island Energy Customers are without power as of 9 p.m., while approximately 9,632 National Grid customers don’t have power in Massachusetts.
