Hold onto your wallet because Shake Shack just earned the not-so-flattering title of America's most expensive fast food chain. A recent study determined that Shake Shack was the most "overpriced" fast-food restaurants, citing online reviews of the burger chain, while it was named the overall most "overpriced" restaurant.

The online language tutoring marketplace Preply recently analyzed nearly 60,000 Google reviews for more than 10,000 restaurants in the top 50 cities in the United States, pinpointing the most overpriced restaurants by looking for keywords such as "overpriced," "pricey," "expensive," and "rip-off" in their Google reviews. What's really shocking is that the fast-casual burger chain rolled out a 3% price increase in mid-March "to address food and wage inflationary pressures," CFO Katie Fogerty announced during a spring earnings call.

The numbers don't lie when it comes to Shake Shack's pricing strategy. Shake Shack then raised prices again in October by 1.5% to offset inflation but said it plans to roll off some of those price increases in the first quarter of 2025.

Despite the criticism, during its most recent earnings report, revenue surged by 14.7% and same-store growth ticked upward by 4.4%, and the chain also experienced a 28% jump in adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) and opened 17 new locations.

Five Guys Battles for Second Place in the Expensive Game

According to FOX Business, Shake Shack was awarded the dubious honor of claiming the top spot on the list as far as large chains are concerned, while Five Guys came in close behind. The Virginia-based burger chain has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Five Guys went viral for all the wrong reasons in March after a diner shared a receipt for $22 (or $24 with tip) following the order of a bacon cheeseburger, soda, and fries, social media mocked the chain for its current prices. A dataset by MoneyGeek revealed that the average price of a meal from this restaurant in 2024 was $20.84, with Jack in the Box, Wendy's, Burger King, and McDonald's staying under the $14 mark.

Five Guys tries to justify its premium pricing through quality ingredients and generous portions. The brand remains committed to using fresh, quality ingredients, and Five Guys founder and CEO Jerry Murrell mentioned in 2010 that the chain raises its prices to reflect the cost it's paying for food, and many food retailers agree that supply, operations, and labor costs factor into what they'll charge consumers.

Even among gourmet fast food burgers, Five Guys still manages to eke out the top spot in terms of price, with a hamburger at Five Guys (840 calories, two patties, and no cheese) costing more than $10.

Sugar Factory Rounds Out the Top Three Most Expensive Chains

Shake Shack Takes the Crown for Most Overpriced Fast Food, Five Guys Battles for Second Place in the Expensive Game, Sugar Factory Rounds Out the Top Three Most Expensive Chains, McDonald's Surprisingly Avoids the Most Expensive List Despite Price Hikes, Starbucks Commands Premium Pricing But Maintains Market Dominance, Chipotle's Price Increases Put It Among the Most Expensive Chains, Wendy's Faces Criticism for Significant Price Increases, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen Sees Massive Price Inflation, Taco Bell's Premium Pricing Strategy Puts It in the Expensive Category, Jimmy John's Rounds Out the Top 10 Most Expensive Fast Food Brands, Consumer Backlash Against Rising Fast Food Prices, Get more from Travelbucketlist!

While not technically a traditional fast food chain, Sugar Factory has earned its spot among the most overpriced dining destinations. Five Guys, whose prices have been decried as "out of control," and Sugar Factory followed Shake Shack as the chains with the second and third most overpriced food complaints.

Search terms considered included "expensive," "pricey," "overpriced," and "not worth the money," among others, with survey authors noting that "If you've ever gone out to eat and found yourself thinking about all the things you could have bought with the money you spent rather than savoring your meal, you most likely have fallen victim to overpriced dining". The celebrity-owned concept has been criticized for charging premium prices that don't always match the dining experience.

The study, conducted by Preply, also found that celebrity-owned restaurants regularly received complaints about being overpriced — specifically, Gordon Ramsay's restaurants, with authors noting that "While diners may be willing to pay a premium for a trendy atmosphere and their favorite celebrity chef's name on the building, they can feel let down if the food served and service offered don't match the quality they anticipated".

McDonald's Surprisingly Avoids the Most Expensive List Despite Price Hikes

Here's where it gets interesting - McDonald's, despite being the world's most valuable fast food brand, didn't crack the top of the most expensive list. In 2024, Starbucks was the highest-valued restaurant brand worldwide, with a brand value of 60.7 billion U.S.

dollars, while McDonald's ranked second with 38 billion dollars in brand value. However, a study by Finance Buzz analyzing menu price data across twelve top fast-food chains between 2014 and 2024 found that most restaurants raised prices by 60% on average during that period, with five chains – McDonald's, Popeyes, Taco Bell, Chipotle, and Jimmy John's – doing so at more than double the actual inflation rate.

The Golden Arches has faced intense scrutiny over pricing lately. McDonald's menu prices have jumped by 100% over the past decade, with analysis finding that a McDouble costs 168% more today than it did in 2014, while a Quarter Pounder with Cheese Meal is 122% more expensive.

To combat customer pushback, McDonald's announced its new McValue platform that launched on January 7, 2025, extending its popular $5 Meal Deal through summer 2025, including a choice of a McDouble or McChicken sandwich, four-piece chicken McNuggets, small fries, and a small soft drink.

Starbucks Commands Premium Pricing But Maintains Market Dominance

Despite being the world's highest-valued restaurant brand, Starbucks has managed to avoid the "most overpriced" designation that plagued its competitors. Starbucks is the world's dominant coffee shop chain, with more than 38,000 stores globally as of April 2024, and it has both company-owned and licensed stores and sells specialty beverages, such as coffees and teas, as well as food items.

As photos of celebrities carrying branded cups in various sizes have flooded the internet in recent years, holding a Starbucks cup has become somewhat of a status symbol to many consumers – even though the product might not stand out from other beverages in terms of quality. The coffee giant's pricing strategy seems to work despite premium costs.

Fast-forward to 2024, it generates an estimated $36.48 billion yearly from sales in 86 countries, and in 2023, Starbucks, the renowned coffee shop company, had the highest sales of any food and drink services company in the world, with McDonald's securing fourth place, with sales of approximately 10.6 billion U.S. dollars less than Starbucks.

Chipotle's Price Increases Put It Among the Most Expensive Chains

Chipotle has earned its place among the most expensive fast food chains through aggressive pricing strategies. Compared to McDonald's or Subway, Chipotle Mexican Grill has only 3,500 outlets worldwide and offers a customizable menu of tacos, burritos, and salads, launched in 1993, making it a young competitor, however, it has mastered its craft and comes fifth with an estimated $10.66 billion in yearly earnings.

Chipotle's CFO Jack Hartung told Yahoo Finance that the company would have to raise prices in the mid- to high-single-digit range. The fast-casual Mexican chain has positioned itself as a premium option in the crowded fast food market.

Chipotle Mexican Grill is a fast-casual Mexican food chain specializing in burritos, tacos, bowls, and similar dishes, operating 3,437 locations in 2023 with restaurants in the U.S., U.K., Canada, France, and Germany. Despite higher prices, the brand has maintained strong performance and customer loyalty through its focus on fresh ingredients and customizable menu options.

Wendy's has been taking heat for some of the most dramatic price increases in the fast food industry. The average cost of a meal at Wendy's has risen an astounding 31% over just the past two years, according to report by the finance site MoneyGeek.

This jump has put the "Fresh, Never Frozen" chain in an uncomfortable position among budget-conscious consumers who once viewed it as an affordable option. The Ohio-based burger chain has tried to balance premium positioning with value offerings.

Wendy's, home of the "Fresh, Never Frozen" beef patty, has been a favorite since 1969, and as of 2024, Wendy's has an estimated income of $2.2 billion, maintaining its position as one of America's most recognizable fast food chains with its commitment to serving fresh ingredients in over 7,000 outlets. Wendy's introduced a "2 for $7 deal" that was available until March 2, 2025, allowing customers to pick two popular food items for $7, including options like the Spicy Chicken Sandwich and 10-piece Nuggets.

Popeyes has shocked customers with some of the most dramatic price increases in the fast food industry. Meanwhile, Popeyes' menu is 86% steeper than it was a decade ago, the same study found.

This Louisiana-inspired chicken chain has seen its prices skyrocket to levels that have many customers questioning whether the famous chicken sandwich is worth the premium cost. The chain's pricing strategy has pushed it into expensive territory that rivals premium fast-casual options.

One customer noted that "I was gonna order Popeyes one time and saw that a 3 piece tenders combo was $18!", highlighting how the brand's pricing has reached levels that shock even loyal customers. Despite being part of the Restaurant Brands International family, which is among the largest global quick-service restaurant chains in the world, established by the $12.5 billion merger of Burger King and Canadian coffee chain Tim Hortons in 2014, and bought Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen in 2017, the brand continues to face pricing pressures.

Jimmy John's Rounds Out the Top 10 Most Expensive Fast Food Brands

Jimmy John's has earned its place among the most expensive fast food chains through premium pricing on what should be simple sandwich fare. The sandwich chain was identified as one of five chains that raised prices at more than double the actual inflation rate between 2014 and 2024.

This "freaky fast" delivery chain has positioned itself as a premium option in the crowded sandwich market, but the pricing has put it out of reach for many traditional fast food customers. The brand's focus on speed and quality has come at a cost that many consumers find difficult to justify.

According to a 2024 survey conducted by LendingTree, 78% of consumers now consider fast food a "luxury" purchase due to its increasing cost. This shift in consumer perception has affected chains like Jimmy John's that have historically relied on convenience and speed rather than premium ingredients to justify their pricing, putting them in an awkward position in the current market landscape.

Consumer Backlash Against Rising Fast Food Prices

The fast food industry is facing unprecedented consumer pushback over pricing that has reached levels many consider unreasonable. Simply put, you'd be hard-pressed to find a major fast-food brand that hasn't raised its prices as of late, with the reality of sky-high fast-food prices being unavoidable for hungry customers in search of affordable food served quickly.

FinanceBuzz reported that fast-food menu prices have jumped by an average of 60% since 2014, meanwhile, the national rate of inflation during that time was just 31%, meaning fast-food prices have increased at close to double the national rate of inflation. The impact on consumer behavior has been dramatic and measurable.

According to Drive Research, the use of grocery delivery services in 2024 rose by 56% compared to 2022, as consumers seek alternatives to expensive fast food options. The fast-food industry used to be a helping hand to countless people looking to grab something fast for dinner or save a few bucks on lunch when the budget was tight, but those days appear firmly placed in the past, with fed-up consumers now regularly railing about rising prices on social media.

What was once considered the affordable dining option has now become a luxury purchase for many American families who can no longer justify the cost.
