Hundreds of gallons of gas spill after car hits Exxon pump in North Carolina, officials say
RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Emergency crews are working to clear up a large fuel spill early Sunday morning after a car hit a gas pump at a Raleigh Exxon.
According to the Raleigh Police Department, first responders — including a hazardous team — were called around 5:30 a.m. to the 4400 block of Capital Boulevard at the Fiddle Stix Exxon gas station.
Officers said a car hit a gas pump late Saturday night and left the scene with gas spewing from the pump for hours.
According to the Raleigh Fire Department, over 500 gallons of fuel spilled into the storm drains at the intersection of Capital Boulevard and Calvary Drive. As of Sunday morning, emergency responders have contained the spill to only the storm drains and have contained the fuel inside.
CBS 17 was on the scene as the Raleigh Fire Department investigated the scene and the hazardous team was clearing up the fuel. The Exxon was closed off with yellow tape.
Officers and fire officials said Calvary Drive at the cross street to Capital Boulevard is closed until the scene clears.
