England reach Euro 2025 final after thrilling comeback

England completed another chaotic comeback to book their place in the Euro 2025 final thanks to goals from Michelle Agyemang and Chloe Kelly on a famous night in Geneva.

The European champions were seconds from exiting the tournament, but a frantic scramble saw Agyemang spin and finish low past Laura Giuliani in the 96th minute to force extra-time.

And Kelly completed the turnaround after Beth Mead was fouled in the box and she buried the rebound in the 119th minute after her spot kick was saved.

The Lionesses had suffered another early setback when Barbara Bonansea punished sloppy defending in the first half and the Azzurre held firm until the 96th minute in Geneva. A positive response in the second half, after Sarina Wiegman had screamed at her side to “wake up!”, saw Lauren Hemp miscue twice.

And in a desperate attempt to find an equaliser, Sarina Wiegman sent on Beth Mead, Agyemang, Chloe Kelly and Aggie Beever-Jones, with England pinning their rivals back.

But just as their luck appeared destined to run out, a chaotic penalty-area scramble saw Agyemang pounce with a slick, low finish to force extra-time and Kelly then followed up after her spot kick was saved to seize the lead and guide England to another final.

Why teenage wildcard Michelle Agyemang is the key to England’s chaos theory

For a striker, Michelle Agyemang is unusual in that she doesn’t like goal celebrations. In a very Gen Z, self-conscious way, the 19-year-old finds the idea of them to be “cringe” and “embarrassing”.

But Agyemang’s initial shyness only partly explains why she is yet to celebrate, at least in a traditional sense, or even smile, after either of her two goals for England, which have remarkably come in just three substitute appearances for her country.

“England started competently but without intensity, as illustrated by how they only created one chance.

“That was Alessia Russo's shot, and only came from rare slack Italian defending. It has once again left them susceptible, and the ease with which Italy worked their way through for that goal should be alarming.

“It could have been cleared three times, before Barbara Bonansea showed the England players the force they needed.

“What a finish. What a game now.

“And yet England have had so many warnings. Wiegman needs yet another rescue job.”

At kick-off in Geneva, England could be seen in their dark blue alternative strip, while the Azzurri instead wore green and white tops, with vine branches running across the front and back of the shirts.
