SWAT called to Molalla city center after man got into police car with rifle inside

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A suspect is in custody Friday morning after heavy police presence took over the city center, according to city officials.

Molalla police and Clackamas County SWAT teams surrounded the area of W Main Street and S Molalla Ave. at around 8 a.m. Two hours later, the suspect was in custody.

The incident escalated when an officer and a man in a small park where homeless are allowed to stay overnight got into a fight, according to a police spokesperson on scene.

Officials said the suspect got into a police car, where there was a locked up patrol rifle.

The man was eventually taken out of the car and was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Bloom and Grow Children’s Center voluntarily entered a lockdown as the incident unfolded, the preschool confirmed to KOIN 6 News. However, staff say they were not notified by police.
