How many national drive-thru coffee shops are there in Louisville? Where you can find them

Louisville has no shortage of locally-owned coffee shops. So, why are there so many national drive-thru coffee chains, like 7 Brew Coffee, Scooter's Coffee and Dutch Bros, the newest addition to the Louisville market, opening up around town?

To customers, it feels like these stores are popping up overnight. And, it's not far from reality.

Since 2021, almost 20 drive-thru coffee spots have opened up around town, with more on the way.

"The recent choices by national drive-thru coffee brands like 7 Brew, Scooter’s Coffee and Dutch Bros to establish roots in Louisville reflects the city’s reputation as a vibrant, fast-moving market as well as the strength and momentum of our regional economy," said Louisville Economic Development Alliance CEO Trevor Paul in a statement to the Courier Journal.

Plans for future franchising are already in the works. 7 Brew Coffee has plans to open at 4023 Poplar Level Road, according to permits found in the Louisville Metro Business Portal. And Louisville's second Dutch Bros location is planned for 4020 Shelbyville Road, the Courier Journal previously reported.

Here is a list of all the drive-thru coffee chains that are now open in the Louisville area:

7 Brew Coffee

7 Brew Coffee, which opened its first location in Louisville in 2022, now has 10 locations around Louisville, including two in Southern Indiana, and at least one more on the way.

When is 7 Brew Coffee open?

7 Brew is open from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Sunday. On Friday and Saturday, it is open from 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.

In addition to drinks like the "Blondie" (with caramel and vanilla breve) and the "Brunette" (with hazelnut and caramel mocha) lattes, 7 Brew has an extensive selection of sugar-free syrup flavors.

Each element of the menu can be customized, whether it's an extra shot of espresso, half the amount of sweetness or the type of milk used.

Scooter's is open from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The "Caramelicious" is one of the most popular coffee drinks at Scooter's. If you're looking for something on the sweeter side, there's a blended menu with drinks that can come with or without espresso. Scooter's also sells Red Bull infusions, which can be made blended.

Dutch Bros

Dutch Bros opened its first Louisville location in June, with a second location in the works. The West Coast-based business has Kentucky stores in Lexington, Richmond and Bowling Green.

In addition to coffee drinks like the Golden Eagle (with espresso, caramel and vanilla breve with caramel drizzle) and the caffeine-heavy "9-1-1" (with six shots of espresso and Irish cream breve, Dutch Bros has its own energy drink, Rebel Energy, with customizable flavors.

Honorable Mentions: Swig and Fizz District

These drive-thru soda shops have a similar business model to chains like 7 Brew and Scooter's, but without the coffee.

Swig, a shop specializing in dirty soda, is launching its first Kentucky location in December.

Swig is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 10 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, Swig is open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Swig specializes in dirty sodas that combine a soda base, cream and sometimes an additional flavor, but also sells energy drinks called revivers.

Fizz District

Fizz District is exclusive to Louisville and currently has one location:

Fizz District is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Sunday.

Fizz District uses "real and clean ingredients," according to its website, to make handmade sodas to create classic flavors like root beer and cherry cola.
