The $12-Million Apartment in ‘Materialists’ Is a Real Home in NYC—Here's What We Know About It

Materialists, like many great rom-coms that came before it, is set in New York City. The Celine Song–directed film follows a love triangle; Matchmaker Lucy (Dakota Johnson) is torn between her broke ex John (Chris Evans) and the perfect guy Harry (Pedro Pascal). As the story unfolds, production designer Anthony Gasparro set out to capture “an authentic, fresh way of seeing New York City,” he tells House Beautiful.

Throughout the movie, a variety of real apartments, restaurants, venues, and more showcase a mix of NYC residents’ realities. “It was based on the New York City that I think is both for the people that can afford to live there quite tastefully as Harry, and then there's the people that would like to get to that place, which is obviously Lucy, and then there's pretty much like the rest of the city, which, you know, has three roommates and lives in a crummy place.”

Along with Gasparro, we spoke with the film’s set decorator Amy Silver to uncover everything you need to know about the Materialists sets—from the exact shade of pink paint in Lucy's office to where the silk bedding in Harry's $12-million Tribeca apartment is from. Plus, we've outlined the filming locations that fans can actually go experience for themselves. Revel in all of the details below.

Lucy works at a high-end matchmaking company known as Adore. For the company's office, “Celine kept saying she wanted a place that just felt like it was an estrogen explosion inside,” Gasparro says.

So, the design team gave a coworking space in the city—with an inherently feminine energy thanks to curved architectural details—a makeover. They painted the walls in Farrow & Ball’s Calamine, a subtle pink paint. More than half of the furniture was swapped out, particularly anything brown or black. “They have a goop vibe in there sometimes,” Silver says—naturally, a desk sourced from the goop x CB2 furniture collab makes a cameo.

To further soften the office, they installed Flos glo-ball lighting. More color and delicate details are found in the artwork. “There's this artist. Her name is Leanne Shapton, and she does watercolors, and we chose some of her work and made vinyls out of them and put them on the wall,” Silver says.

Florals are a recurring motif throughout the movie.

Also at the Adore headquarters are glossy close-ups of flowers by the late photographer David Seidner, which hang in Violet’s office. “Everyone who works at Adore, their name is a flower,” Silver points out. “So Violet was the head… There was Violet, Rose, Daisy. So there's a lot of flower themes in the movie that kind of pop in and out.”

Silver continues, “Even John's apartment—he has a little flower in a vase.” There’s also a prehistoric connection to flowers spotlighted in the film. For more floral touches, the team worked with local florists Liza Lubell of Pear Tree Flowers and Ariel Dearie, who did florals for the upstate wedding (more on that stunning location later).

Harry’s Tribeca pad is a real apartment in the downtown neighborhood.

The apartment portrayed as Harry’s casual $12-million home is a real apartment in Tribeca, but finding the right residence for this character wasn’t easy. Harry’s place needed to instantly register as expensive, but it had to match his character’s personality.

Gasparro explains: “He has a very refined taste. He's not one of these finance bros that just doesn't really know what he's doing. He's obviously maybe hired an interior designer to help pick up pieces. He has a sophisticated palette. He knows art, and we wanted to kind of show you what an authentic, wealthy, tasteful Manhattanite would choose as an apartment.”

It turns out, there isn’t a treasure trove of places like this at a producer’s fingertips. “The biggest struggle was actually finding an apartment that would accommodate that, because all the [apartments] that become available to shoot in are basically giant white boxes,” says Gasparro.

Luckily, location manager Joseph Mullaney found an apartment that fit the bill. The family-owned unit came with herringbone wood flooring and custom millwork, which exude warmth. Areas like the kitchen provided just the right balance between charm and luxury. “All the finishes were just gorgeous, especially the walnut countertop,” Gasparro says. "[The kitchen] was not too big. I think it was built for somebody that either loves to cook all the time or just orders DoorDash all the time… or whatever the more highbrow [version of that is.]”

While some of the original furniture in the apartment was kept, Silver created custom pieces and brought in new lighting and art to transform the unit into a more bespoke bachelor pad.

Harry has an expansive taste in lighting and art.

The lighting and art in Harry's apartment are even greater than what's seen on screen. Among the expensive, classic lighting are a standing lamp with a ribbon shade by Doria, Philippe Stark floor lamps, and Charlotte Perriand sconces. Pieces by Noguchi and Santa & Cole are also in the mix.

While not a lot of Harry's art collection is seen in the movie, Silver says, it's quite impressive. Some of the notable artists and photographers include Francesco Clemente, Ross Bleckner, Louisa Lambri, Louise Lawler, and Saul Leiter.

And it cost "thousands of dollars," according to Silver. Bloomingdale's sells a handful of options, should you hope to recreate Harry's bed with a full silk set in pure white, or if you're in the market for a slight upgrade, like new pillowcases.

Also in Harry's bedroom is a custom-made headboard “that was kind of inspired by a Billy Cotton headboard. It had a gray lacquer trim,” Silver says. “The lamps [on the nightstands] were Vico Magistretti lamps that we sort of got just in the nick of time from Italy,” she adds.

The restaurants are real eateries with romantic interiors.

“Everything was pretty much centralized in downtown New York," Gasparro says of the restaurants featured in the movie. “The dates at each place kind of had a very specific sort of sensuality,” he says of the atmospheres. Filming took place at Altro Paradiso, l’abeille, Sushi Ichimura (which is adjoined to l’abeille), and Nobu Downtown.

When Lucy attends the wedding of one of her successful matches, it takes place across a few locations. The reception was filmed at the JW Marriott Essex House in the hotel's Beaux Arts-style Grand Salon, which boasts glistening chandeliers and hand-painted murals. Filming also took place at Saint Bartholomew's Church on Park Avenue for the church ceremony, Trump Plaza for the bridal suite moment, and Lotte New York Palace for the cocktail hour.

In High Falls, New York, the wedding venue known as Crested Hen Farms lent its serene setting for the film's fictional upstate wedding. "That was actually a wedding venue that [Shabier Kirchner,] our director of photography, had attended a wedding there about a couple of years before. He was like, we should really give this place a look, and we went there and fell in love with it."
