The gym is a shared space, and you're sometimes working out in close proximity to others, so getting on someone's nerves is easy to do. While you shouldn't feel like you're walking on eggshells, some small adjustments to your behavior and an overall courteous and considerate attitude go a long way. Here are 10 dos and 10 don'ts of gym etiquette so you don't end up being the target of everyone's silent glares.
1. Wipe-Down Equipment

Keep in mind the gym is a shared space. Even if you were only on it for a minute, wipe down every piece of equipment after using it as a courtesy to others.
2. Put Weights Back

Don't assume someone's going to do it for you. Put your weights back on the rack where you found them after you're done. It's the considerate thing to do.
3. Get To Fitness Classes on Time

You won't be making any yoga friends if you're the one walking in late, disrupting the zen vibes just as everyone is getting their namaste on. It's disruptive, rude, and easily avoidable.

It can happen by accident sometimes, but if you're routinely dropping weights loudly after every set, it's extremely disruptive to everyone around. Setting them down with control is a good practice for you, too.
4. Don't Stare

Staring is rude anywhere, but it can make people especially uncomfortable in gym environments while they're physically exerting themselves to the max. Don't freak people out; keep your focus on yourself.
5. Don't Circuit Hog

Circuit hogging is when you monopolize multiple pieces of equipment because they're all part of your circuit workout. Pick one at a time and don't lollygag if others are waiting.
6. Don't Leave A Mess

This is an obvious one, but needs to be stated anyway. Don't leave your towel, water bottle, or used paper towels or wipes lying around. Clean up after yourself.
7. Don't Talk On The Phone or Film Others

Be mindful of your phone use while at the gym. While it's okay if you need to take a call, keep it brief and don't talk too loudly. You also shouldn't take videos or pictures of people without their permission, even if they're just in the background of yours.
8. Don't Block Someone's View

The mirrors are there for everyone. While it may be difficult sometimes, as mirror space quickly becomes overcrowded, try not to walk in front of someone and block their view.
9. Don't Grunt Excessively

It's normal to make some noise while you're exerting yourself, but try not to be too loud. The gym is a shared space, and your grunts are disruptive. If you feel the need to yell, it's a sign you're trying to lift too much weight anyway.
10. Don't Work Out In Large Groups

Group classes are one thing, but going to the gym with all your bros is another thing entirely. You might be someone who feels more motivated working out with people, and that's cool, but working out in a group of four or more is a huge no-no.
