A study conducted by NASA in partnership with the University of Hawaii warns that a shift in the moon’s orbit could trigger catastrophic, record-breaking floods across the globe.

With a change in the Moon’s orbit announced, the year 2030 could be disastrous for the world’s population, especially those living near the coast. In a recent press release, researcher Bill Nelson stated: “Combined with climate change, this lunar phenomenon could trigger devastating floods on coastlines around the world. The cumulative effects of the Moon’s gravitational force, the rise in sea and ocean levels, and climate change will only 'worsen' an already dire situation.” His comments were reported by the media outlet 7sur7

Coastal populations under threat

The change in the lunar orbit is a natural phenomenon that occurs every 20 years. The Live Science website points out that in a regular cycle (18.6 years), the oscillation of the Moon’s orbit slightly changes its position relative to Earth. According to NASA, “for half of this cycle, the phenomenon leads to lower high tides and higher low tides. During the other half, the tides are amplified, with higher high tides and lower low tides,” reports 7sur7.

In a few years, the rise in sea levels will become more significant and, combined with other factors, this phenomenon could pose a real threat to coastal populations.
