Radhika Apte’s Bold New Film Hits OTT: What It’s About And Where To Watch For Free

When a film about a lonely bride behaving like a nocturnal animal earns a standing ovation at Cannes, you know cinema is having a wonderfully weird moment. Enter Sister Midnight (2024), a dark comedy that’s not afraid to ruffle feathers, bare truths (quite literally), and break all the rules.

Fresh, boundary-pushing cinema is striking a chord with global audiences, and Sister Midnight is a shining example. Debuting in the prestigious Directors’ Fortnight section at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, this genre-blending dark comedy has since enjoyed a successful theatrical run and is now making waves on OTT platforms.

Despite receiving international acclaim, including a BAFTA nomination, the film encountered significant censorship in India. Several scenes, notably those involving nudity, were cut before its June 16 theatrical release. Nonetheless, the uncensored version is now streaming on Tubi, a free platform rapidly growing in popularity in India. Sister Midnight is available in both Hindi and English, having premiered in the United States on May 16.

Technically, the film is a visual and auditory treat. Shot on 35mm, Sister Midnight features lush cinematography by Svere Sordal and an evocative score by Paul Banks. Stop-motion sequences involving animals add a quirky, surreal touch to the narrative. Supporting performances by Ashok Pathak, Chhaya Kadam, and Smita Tambe round out the cast with compelling energy.

Beyond the eccentricity, Sister Midnight delivers poignant social commentary. It satirises the traditional institution of arranged marriage, highlights the challenges faced by women in rigid social structures, and includes rare, sensitive depictions of the transgender community.

The result is a provocative yet entertaining 107-minute blend of comedy, horror, and drama; all wrapped in Dolby Atmos sound.

With a worldwide box office gross of $287,071 and growing interest online, the dark comedy Sister Midnight has secured its place as one of the most talked-about indie films of the year.
