Russian strikes on Kyiv have reportedly killed at least 15 people and injured over 150, including an elderly American man. Ukraine's Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed it was the deadliest attack on the capital this year. The assault has raised serious concerns over the safety of civilians.

Bruce stated, “We are aware of last night’s attack on Kyiv that resulted in numerous casualties, including the tragic death of a U.S. citizen.” She added, “We condemn those strikes and extend our deepest condolences to the victims and to the families of all those affected.”

Bruce added, “The thread throughout all of the work that we do is the department has no higher priority than the safety and security of U.S. citizens abroad.”

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the American was found in a house near the strike site. Klitschko highlighted ongoing Russian aerial attacks and rising pressure on Ukraine’s defenses.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes as terrorism and urged a strong international response. He noted that residents remained trapped under rubble.

Zelenskyy said Russian President Vladimir Putin "is doing this solely because he can afford to keep waging war. He wants the war to go on."

Zelenskyy added, "Right now in Kyiv, efforts are underway to rescue people from under the rubble of an ordinary residential building—it's still unclear how many remain trapped. The Russians destroyed an entire section of the apartment block. In total, buildings in eight districts of Kyiv have been damaged."
