Given the right circumstances

One of US President Donald Trump’s fiercest Republican critics, Alaskan senator Lisa Murkowski, has said that given the right circumstances she could see herself voting as an independent with the Democrats.
The key to Murkowski's loyalty

The key to Murkowski's allegiance lies in the interests of the Alaskan people and whether the bill in question would help them.
At a push

Pressed by GD Politics podcaster Galen Druke, Murkowski said that “hypothetically” there “may be that possibility.”

Friction with Trump

Murkowski has long said that Alaskan interests come before party alignment, a stance which has seen her come head-to-head on a number of issues with Trump.
Not a party person

"I still have the same Republican values that I have long held. But my allegiance is not to the Republican Party. It's not to a party,” she told CBS News.
A broad spectrum of support

Her loyalty, she says "is to the people who returned me. And those people were Republicans and Democrats and independents and nonpartisans."
The "beautiful" base

“So, when people back here in Washington talk about 'I need to answer to the base,' my base is so beautiful and diverse and eclectic and genuine,” she added.
Unconvinced by the Democrats

While there may be certain circumstances in which Murkowski would get behind a Democratic bill, the party in general fails to convince her.
A gulf of opinion

“As challenged as I think we may be on the Republican side, I don't see the Democrats being much better,” she told Galen Druke. “Quite honestly they've got some policies that I just inherently disagree with.”
Exploring new avenues

But Druke did get Murkowski to admit that “There is some openness to exploring something different than the status quo.”
Calling out those "afraid" of Trump

A moderate Republican, Murkowski has taken fellow Republicans in Congress to task for simply toeing Trump’s line and being “afraid” to challenge him, Politico reports.
Congress's role according to Murkowski

"I don't think that we should cede – we, the Congressional branch – should cede ground to anybody, not to the courts, not to the executive," she told CBS.
Criticism of the Zelensky dressing down

She herself has spoken out about Trump’s humiliation of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office, stating that the President was “walking away from our allies.”
The DOGE trauma

She has also said that Elon Musk’s brutal cuts to the federal workforce as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency were “traumatizing people.”
Concern over Medicaid cuts

She has also expressed concerns over Trump's "big, beautiful bill, telling CBS, "I've been pretty clear that when it comes to Medicaid, those cuts that would harm Alaskan beneficiaries, that's not something that I can take home, right?"
