Will We Get a “We Were Liars” Season 2?

Key Points:

  • We Were Liars has not been renewed for a second season—yet.
  • The showrunners have discussed renewing the series with Prime Video.
  • The prequel novel, Family of Liars, could serve as the foundation for future seasons.
  • A sequel novel, We Fell Apart, is set to be released in November of this year, which could also shape the narrative of future seasons.

Spoilers Ahead

E. Lockhart’s best-selling 2014 young adult novel We Were Liars was recently adapted for screens into a binge-worthy television series. All eight episodes of the first season were released on Prime Video on June 18, and the season finale’s shocking twist seems to have set the stage for more to come.

Season 1 follows the events of the first of two (soon to be three) books in the We Were Liars series. The book and show take place over two summers, following the wealthy and elite teenagers of the Sinclair family, Cadence (Emily Alyn Lind), Johnny (Joseph Zada), and Mirren (Esther McGregor), as well as their friend Gat (Shubham Maheshwari). The first summer takes place on the Sinclair family’s private island, where Cadence suffers a head injury, restricting her ability to remember the traumatic events she suffered.

In the second summer, Cadence reconnects with her siblings, confused about why they did not reach out to her for an entire year. In the shocking season finale, Cadence remembers her trauma from the previous summer. She realizes that her siblings and Gat died in a fire that they themselves caused and that she has been speaking to their ghosts, whose spirits are still trapped on the island.

Ahead, everything we know so far about a potential second season of We Were Liars.

Will we get a season 2?

Not yet, but it has been discussed. The first season just finished airing, and Prime Video might not decide to renew immediately. Showrunners Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie told The Wrap that they’ve had “endless conversations” with Prime Video on the topic, but they will still need a good viewership to justify the significant financial investment that a second season would require.

“We’re looking forward to the data working in our favor,” Plec said.

In an interview with Variety, MacKenzie said, “The great thing about this show is that the first season has a satisfying, powerful ending. So I want people who generally don’t tune in to the first season because they’re afraid it’s going to get canceled to know that they’re safe to watch this show, and if it doesn’t get a second season, you’ve still got a whole story. But also, Emily wrote three books, and we love this world. We love our cast. We’d love the opportunity that exists for more story, so we’re hopeful that we’ll get to come back and do more. But also, should this be a limited series, I think it’s a beautiful story.”

What could happen in season 2?

A clue to the potential focus of season 2 is in the recently published prequel to the story, called Family of Liars. This book’s events would set the stage for the second season to focus more on the older Sinclairs and their familial relationships.

“The best gift that Emily Lockhart gave us as we were sitting down to write We Were Liars was, she published Family of Liars, which was a prequel about the Sinclair sisters when they were teenagers. The book opens with Carrie telling the story of a very dark time and a very bad summer to her dead son,” Plec shared in an interview with The Wrap. “We just wanted the audience to know that there’s still more story to tell, and we’re really looking forward to the opportunity to be able to do it.”

If season 2 follows Family of Liars, we might get to see a new face starring as 17-year-old Carrie Sinclair, before she was a mother. Johnny’s ghost is also a returning character in the prequel, so hopefully the future Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping star, Joseph Zada, will come back as well.

A second season could also follow the upcoming sequel, We Fell Apart: A We Were Liars Novel, which is set to release on November 4, 2025. The book will not be a direct sequel, but it will follow a new group of characters in the same Gothic beachside world. Lockhart has offered a brief sneak peak to the novel, introducing Matilda, who meets her long-lost family through a mysterious invitation from her mysterious father, Kingsley Cello. When she arrives at their crumbling beach cottage, he is nowhere to be found, but she meets her siblings Meer, Brock, and Tatum.

Much like the story of We Were Liars, the plan for a second season is mostly a mystery. If you haven’t yet, read We Were Liars and Family of Liars, pre-order We Fell Apart, and stream We Were Liars on Prime Video.
