Busy Championship Sunday at Hoopfest
It was a busy championship Sunday at Hoopfest as a new dunk contest champion was crowned and it was another year of dominance in the men's and women's elite divisions.
The action got underway in the morning as Team Empire Fitness looked to go back to back in the women's elite division. It was another clean sweep for the team of Gonzaga assistant coach Jazmine Redmon, former Zags Shannon Reader and Jessie Loera and former professional Ciara Andrews.
Redmon was named the tournament MVP for the second consecutive season.
"I have been able to play with this group of girls in different aspects of my life so coming together and just playing is a lot of fun. A lot of us went to the same school and were able to play together prior to this, so just getting back and having that chemistry is a big deal," Redmon said.
In the dunk contest, the final round came down to a trio of dunkers: three-time defending champion Tyler Kronk, Isaac Fisher and Amar Rivers. In an upset, it was young Isaac Fisher who would dethrone Kronk and win his first dunk contest title.
"It feels good. All that hard work you put in, all those failures and losses I have been taking, the third place finish, to finally win it in front of my family and this crowd is just an amazing feeling, there's no feeling like it," Fisher said.
In the Toyota Shootout, it was David Borovetz who hit the halfcourt shot to win this year's custom Hoopfest Toyota Tacoma truck.
"I was really nervous, but then I was like if I make it, it'll be fun and if I don't, I don't, so once I got to the line I just let it go and made sure to give it enough power and it felt really, really good. It was cool to watch the ball go in and I was like, 'Sweet!'," Borovetz said.
Finally, the day wrapped up with the men's elite championship game between six-time defending champion Hub Northwest and Jet Juice.
It was a tight game throughout and with both Parker Kelly and Mike Hart not quite at 100 percent, it was big man Rob Lippman who would take home MVP honors with a strong championship performance in the seventh consecutive win for the team of Kelly, Hart, Lippman and former Eastern Eagle Marc Axton.
This brings yet another fun year of Hoopfest to a close.
