US President Donald Trump’s strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities proved to be unpopular in the immediate aftermath of the bombings. However, new data shows most now back the attack, according to findings from The Tyson Group.

Support rose among all political groups

A June 27th Axios report cited two polls from The Tyson Group, one before the strikes and one conducted from June 25th to June 16th. The data showed that support for the strikes rose among all key political affiliations after the attack.

According to The Tyson Group’s findings, before the attack, only 43% of those surveyed supported an airstrike on Iran. That number rose to 55% after the attack. Republicans jumped from 72% support to a whopping 82% support.

However, it wasn’t just Republican support for the attacks that increased, Independent support for the strikes rose from 32% to 43% and Democrat support increased from a rather low 20% to a slightly higher 33% according to the data.

“A majority favored limited strikes, but nearly as many said they were worried about a widening war and Iran retaliating on U.S. soil,” Axios wrote about the new survey data. 46% said they thought some type of Iranian attack would happen in the US.

Interestingly, despite wide support for the attack, 75% of those surveyed thought that the Israel-Iran ceasefire would escalate into a larger war, while 5% said the strikes didn’t make the United States any safer, as opposed to 36% who said they did.

Other important survey data

“The survey sheds light on Americans' nuanced views of war and rapidly evolving foreign policy,” Axios explained. The findings come just weeks after one of the first polls on war between Israel and Iran showed Americans didn’t want the US to get involved.

Most have no interest in joining the conflict

Prior to the attacks on Iran, Trump seemed poised to bring the United States into Israel’s war with Iran, but the polling at the time showed that a vast majority of Americans did not want the US to get involved in the conflict.

16% say the US should get involved

Conducted by The Economist and YouGov from June 13th to 16th, and cited by the Federalist Society, the poll found that just 16% of the 1,512 Americans surveyed thought that the US military should get involved in the war between Israel and Iran.

A majority don’t want to fight Iran

Major changes in support were revealed, Support rose among all political groups, What the polling revealed, Democrats and Independents, “A majority favored limited strikes”, More key findings from the poll, Other important survey data, Most have no interest in joining the conflict, 16% say the US should get involved, A majority don’t want to fight Iran, The issue crossed party lines, Most say Iran is an enemy, Trump is doing a bad job, Israel’s justifications, Americans aren’t concerned, 24% say Iran’s nuclear program is a threat

An overwhelming majority (60%) said the US shouldn’t get involved in the war, while a rather large number of Americans (24%) weren’t sure. Interestingly, however, the results were surprisingly uniform among all sides of the political spectrum, not unlike the recent findings from The Tyson Group.

The issue crossed party lines

According to the findings, 53% of Republicans said the US shouldn’t get involved in the war, while a slightly larger majority of Democrats (64%) said the same. A majority of US independents (61%) also didn’t want the US military to get involved in the conflict.

Most say Iran is an enemy

The results were surprising considering 50% of those polled said they viewed Iran as an enemy, so the findings might hint at a growing isolationist sentiment in the US, or just a lack of desire among Americans to get involved in another war in the Middle East.

Trump is doing a bad job

According to a transcript of his comments announcing Israel’s attack on Iran, Netanyahu said Tehran could have developed a nuclear weapon within a year, or even months, but this issue wasn’t something that worried Americans.
