Naples and surrounding areas were jolted by their strongest earthquake in four decades, renewing concerns about the nearby Campi Flegrei supervolcano. On Monday, June 30, 2025, a magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck near Bacoli, roughly 10 miles west of Naples.

Residents throughout the city reported intense shaking, calling it the most significant quake in recent memory.

Local Response and Safety Measures

According to Pozzuoli Mayor Luigi Manzoni, there have been no immediate reports of damage following the earthquake. Speaking to GB News, Manzoni urged calm as volunteers and authorities inspected buildings and infrastructure for safety.

As a precaution, train services in the region were temporarily halted, and the Naples subway system was suspended while safety checks were conducted.

Ongoing Seismic Activity

The event was not an isolated incident, but part of a series of tremors that have affected the area recently. The Daily Mail noted that Monday’s earthquake was followed by three smaller aftershocks, registering magnitudes of 2.0, 1.6, and 1.0.

Mauro Antonio Di Vito, director of the Vesuvius Observatory at Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, explained that the seismic activity is typical for the region and not unexpected. He emphasized the need for accurate communication to prevent unnecessary alarm, while confirming there are currently no signs of an imminent eruption.

Volcanic Threats and Scientific Concerns

The Campi Flegrei supervolcano, dormant since its last eruption in 1538, remains under close watch by scientists. The American Geographical Society has warned that increased ground deformation, rising carbon dioxide emissions, and frequent tremors may suggest magma movement beneath the surface.

In the last six months, the region has experienced about 3,000 tremors, with experts also observing signs of ground swelling and gas release that have intensified concerns about possible volcanic activity.
