Will Cuylle: NY Rangers lock up RFA forward to two-year deal

Rangers fans need not worry about losing Will Cuylle to an offer sheet.

The 23-year-old winger isn’t going anywhere, with New York locking up its top restricted free-agent priority to a two-year, $7.8 million deal on July 1, as first reported by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman. It will carry an average annual value of $3.9 million and leave the Rangers with around $3 million in remaining salary cap space.

Cuylle’s coming off a sophomore NHL season in which he scored 20 goals while breaking the franchise’s single-season record with 301 hits. It’s that combination of scoring and physicality, along with his responsible defensive play, that made the power winger a hot commodity this offseason.

Despite fears of another team swooping in, signs have always pointed to Cuylle remaining with the team that drafted him 60th overall in 2020. It was just a matter of finding common ground in negotiations.

The Blueshirts had to reach beyond their typical comfort zone to keep the 6-foot-3, 212-pounder, handing him the largest second NHL contract for any Ranger since defenseman Adam Fox signed a seven-year, $66.5 million extension in Nov. 2021.

Cuylle's AAV is the highest ever for any New York forward on a second contract, surpassing the $3.25 million Pavel Buchnevich received in 2019.

The 2024-25 Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award winner earned it by rising above the fray during an otherwise disastrous Rangers' season. He should enter 2025-26 with a chance to move into the top six, with last month's Chris Kreider trade clearing a path at left wing.

The signing came toward the end of a day in which team president Chris Drury zeroed in on his three-stage plan.

Part 1 was taken care of early when the Rangers signed top free-agent defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov to a seven-year, $49 million contract. Cuylle was the next critical component, with a league source confirming that New York is closing in on a trade that will send RFA defenseman K'Andre Miller to the Carolina Hurricanes as the third and final piece.
