Heavy rains bring flooded streets in coastal Monmouth, Ocean; thunderstorms possible

Severe thunderstorms are causing power outages and flooded roads throughout the Jersey Shore and police are warning drivers to be careful. The National Weather Service in Mount Holly warns that wind gusts of 70 mph are possible in the Manchester and Lakehurst area.

The thunderstorms have left some 10,000 people without power in Ocean County as of 5:45 p.m., according to JCP&L. Outages have affected a little more than 100 in Monmouth County.

Police were warning drivers to avoid flooded streets. The weather service said rain could fall at a rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour, and that flash flooding is already occurring.

In Lakewood and Toms River, the weather service reported that between 1 and 1.5 inches of rain have already fallen, producing street flooding.

A severe thunderstorm warning remains in effect in northeastern Ocean County and southeastern Monmouth County until 6:15 p.m. today.

In Neptune, Route 35, 6th Avenue, Hamilton Avenue, Taylor Avenue and the surrounding area have all been inundated with rainwater, according to the township's Office of Emergency Management.

In Asbury Park, the weather is causing flash flooding throughout the city, police said.  Authorities are warning motorists not to try to drive through flooded streets.

City police are also advising people living in areas that ordinarily flood, such as Wesley Lake, Deal Lake, Bangs Avenue and Ridge Avenue and the surrounding area, to relocate their vehicles as a precaution.

In Toms River, Irons Street and Herflicker Boulevard were closed about 7 p.m. Tuesday due to flooding, according to the Ocean County Sheriff's Office.

The Ocean Gate Police Department also warned motorists Tuesday evening that local streets in that borough were flooding.

The following areas were affected: Toms River, Long Branch, Asbury Park, Lakewood, Jackson, Howell, Tinton Falls, Manasquan, Point Pleasant Beach, Farmingdale, Mantoloking, Leisure Village, Allenwood, Leisure Village East, Elberon, Ramtown, Brick Township, Collingwood Park, Cedar Glen West, and Point Pleasant.

Elsewhere, traffic on the Garden State Parkway was traveling slowly throughout the region — with many motorists flashing their hazard lights — as they moved throughout the evening commute.
