Player ratings for Lions after dominant Reds victory

It was more of the same for the Lions in Brisbane as they put in another 8-try performance to win 52-12 against the Queensland Reds.

The first half was shaky yet again for Andy Farrell’s men as they leaked a couple soft tries but they really came alive in the second half. They ran in some great tries and there were a number of very impressive performances.

Competition for places is really heating up ahead of the test series in less than three weeks’ time.

Player ratings for the Lions vs Reds

Andrew Porter: 6

Some very good carries including a try, another solid shift during his 50 minutes.

Ronan Kelleher: 5

A couple of lineout losses, it really needs to be shored up come the tests.

Will Stuart: 3

Showed glimpses of what he can do with ball in hand, but poor discipline could be costly against Australia.

Maro Itoje (c): 9

In the best way Itoje was a nuisance in defence. Came up clutch with some crucial steals and tackles.

Ollie Chessum: 6

Some nice touches from the Leicester man. He got to spread his legs and show off his athleticism too before he went off.

Tom Curry: 5

Not his best performance, slipped off a couple of tackles which could’ve been more costly against better opposition.

Jac Morgan: 10

Notching up 21 tackles, 9 carries and a try, Morgan was immense. The battle for the 7 shirt is heating up between himself and van der Flier.

Jack Conan: 9

Conan is really nailing down the 8 jersey for himself. Great engine and some of the silkiest hands in rugby.

Jamison Gibson-Park: 8

Great start to life as a Lion. His high octane play really carried the Lions’ attack in first half.

Finn Russell: 8

A true conductor of an orchestra. Russell pulled the strings and linked up great with Gibson-Park.

Duhan van der Merwe: 4

Nice finish for his try but didn’t really impress outside of that. Needs to protect the ball better.

Bundee Aki: 6

Not a vintage first half from Bundee, but he turned things around in the second. Some great carries leading to scores.

Huw Jones: 7

After a shaky first half Jones stepped up after the break. Took his try very well, re-gathering his own charge down and running it in from his own half.

Tommy Freeman: 9

The battle between him and Hansen will be great to watch. 2 more tries for Freeman and some great work rate around the pitch.

Elliot Daly: 6

His injuries came at an unfortunate time but Daly has really rolled back the years on the tour so far. Hopefully he doesn’t miss out on the test series.

Substitutes: 7

The subs came on and really shored up the discipline issues the Lions had early on, especially the front row of Genge, Cowan-Dickie and Bealham. Ryan looked good on debut meanwhile Ben Earl didn’t look out of place at 12.

Alex Mitchell kept up with Gibson-Park’s tempo after he came on while Fin Smith did well off set plays, especially for Ringrose’s try at the end.

Ringrose being shifted onto the wing is a bit worrying but he did all he could out there, including his score.

Andy Farrell: 8

He would be disappointed again with that first half performance as the Lions conceded more than they would’ve wanted. That and the ill-discipline could be costly for the Lions come the test matches and it’s not doubt something Joe Schmidt will target.

However whatever was said at halftime did the trick as the Lions asserted themselves and came out the worthy winners.

Still plenty of work-ons and wrinkles to iron out but the foundations are in place for this team as they look to become the first Lions team to win a test series since 2013.
