Player ratings for Lions after biggest test yet against Brumbies

Jamison Gibson-Park probably described it best when he said that the Lions were ‘patchy’ in their 36-24 win against the Brumbies in Canberra.

They scored some beautiful tries and were great to watch in attack, but the same issues around discipline, handling and the breakdown persisted. However to give the Brumbies their dues they have been the best Super Rugby side the Lions have faced so far and they played the Lions well and punished their mistakes.

It’s not all perfect for Andy Farrell and his coaching ticket as they now have to decide their test team for Saturday week after the Lions face a combined Australia/New Zealand XV on Saturday.

Ellis Genge: 7

Looked impressive when he was on, settling into system well just needs to sort out discipline.

Dan Sheehan: 8

It’s a whole different ball game when he’s on, brings so much to the attack.

Tadhg Furlong: 7

Really stepped up to claim a starting birth, could he start his 7th test in a row Saturday week?

Maro Itoje (c): 8

Came up clutch again in defence. Some huge lineout steals and ran a good attacking lineout

Joe McCarthy: 7

Becoming the enforcer the Lions need to face the Wallabies

Ollie Chessum: 7

Did his test odds the world of good, a real athlete.

Tom Curry: 5

Doesn’t have the handles to play in this system, stopped numerous attacks.

Jack Conan: 6

His skill in the wide channel is definitely what the Lions need, but didn’t have his best performance today

Jamison Gibson-Park: 9

He seems to get quicker and quicker each match, Lions attack is scintillating when he’s on form.

Finn Russell: 9

The Yin to Gibson-Park’s Yang, this could potentially be one of the Lions’ best half back pairings.

James Lowe: 7

Butchered a chance to have two tries today but his kicking will be crucial for the Lions.

Bundee Aki: 5

Another one who forced too many passes today, when he carries he’s great but the hands weren’t as slick as normal.

Garry Ringrose: 8

When we thought Jones had claimed the 13 jersey Ringrose claps back with another great performance and great try to boost.

Tommy Freeman: 6

Caught out for Brumbies third try, hasn’t kept up the momentum from the Argentina test.

Blair Kinghorn: 6

Really unfortunate with injury, hopefully it was just a precaution call.

Substitutes: 7

Some great impacts from the likes of Porter, Pollock and van der Flier. Was very nice to see Hansen run out in his hometown and nearly crash over for a try at the end.

Marcus Smith had some lovely touches after coming on in the first half. He could make an impact in these tests as a substitute with his skill and pace.

When it’s clicking it’s really clicking but it still seems like the basics aren’t up to scratch. The breakdown is a huge worry now and something Joe Schmidt will definitely target in the first test. Handling errors have plagued all the warm up games and could make one think that these tests will be a very stop-start affair.
