I’m A Professional Cook & Would Buy This Rotisserie Chicken Over Making One Myself

When life gets busy and cooking a meal from scratch isn’t an option, let rotisserie chicken find its way to your family's dinner table. This glorified slow-cooked chicken is a mainstay in grocery stores and membership-based clubs (looking at you, Costco) around the country. I put six to the test to see which one was the juiciest, had the best seasoning, and had the crispiest skin. You may be surprised by my favorite.

This one took me by surprise. If I had to classify "rotisserie chicken" as a flavor profile this one features it perfectly. It was simple in that I couldn't detect any notes of herbs or other seasonings. And, I liked the golden, crispy caramelized skin, but the drum was overcooked, and the meat overall wasn’t as juicy as others.

Similar to Stop & Shop’s, this rotisserie chicken had crispy skin but dry drumstick meat. The breast was a tad juicier, though. (I wonder if the dryness is a result of it sitting under the heat lamp too long?) Looking at the ingredients on the package, it was only seasoned with salt.

I was hyped for the Whole Foods version after hearing rave reviews. But, to my surprise, it was lackluster. Right off the bat, I noticed that the breasts and drumsticks were dry. I did, however, really like the deeply golden skin and its hints of dried herbs. I noticed buttery, honey elements to it as well. Overall, it had more flavor than the previous two.

I never think of Eataly for rotisserie chicken, so this was a fun one to try. But the breasts and drumsticks were dry, and something was giving a metallic taste. This chicken was definitely saltier than previous ones, but not intolerable. It makes me wonder if it was brined before slow roasting. I did appreciate the outer seasoning, which tasted like salt and pepper.

I loved the golden, caramel skin on this one. If I made rotisserie chicken, I’d want mine to look just the same. The drumsticks were flavorful and juicy, as were the breasts. I do wish there were other seasonings or herbs to make this one pop.

The prize winner! For me, the Sam’s Club chicken brought it home. Its earthy, paprika-rubbed coating sold me (I love a paprika moment). So this was the standout. The skin was crispy, and the meat wasn’t dry at all.

In the end, I ate my caloric allowance for the day (year?) with all the rotisserie chickens. Safe to say Sam's Club was the clear winner.
