What we know about Moscow’s KIA

The Russian Armed Forces have seen more than one hundred thousand troops killed in action according to the latest report on war casualties from two Russian independent media.
Confirming those killed in action

The Russian independent media outlet Mediazona has been confirming Russian deaths in the war in collaboration with BBC News Russian since the invasion of Ukraine began and recently published a new update.
Independent Russian media

In their latest report, Mediazona, and BBC News Russian, have confirmed the identities of 107,620 Russian military personnel killed in action while fighting in Ukraine.
Another 2,857 soldiers were added to the list

The Kyiv Independent reported that since their previous update in April 2025, the news outlets have added the names of 2,857 military personnel to their growing list of dead.
Analyzing the dead since the war started

A full list of names of the war dead was published in February for the first time since the outlets began analyzing those killed in action. It is believed the figure of those killed in Ukraine is much higher than what Mediazona and BBC News Russian have confirmed.
Over 160,000 may be dead

Mediazona estimates that roughly 165,000 Russian military personnel have been killed since Vladimir Putin launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The losses could be even higher

While Russia does not provide figures regarding its dead, BBC News noted that military experts believe the number from Mediazona and BBC News Russian covers roughly 45% to 65% of deaths, meaning they could range from 164,223 to 237,211.
A third-party assessment

As of March 20th, the UK Ministry of Defence believed the Russian Armed Forces had likely sustained 900,000 casualties, of which it was believed 200,000 to 250,000 would have been killed, the highest losses Russia has suffered since the Second World War.
Breaking down the numbers

The current death toll according to the updated report from Mediazona and BBC News Russian published on May 9th includes roughly 26,600 volunteers, 17,100 recruited military personnel, and 12,000 mobilized soldiers, including over 5,000 Russian officers.
Officer deaths have declined

“The proportion of officer deaths among overall casualties has steadily declined since the conflict began,” Mediazona explained. Russia began the conflict with an officer loss rate of roughly 10%. That dropped roughly 2-3% by November 2024.
How deaths are confirmed

Mediazona noted that volunteers use videos from memorial services, social media posts, state-organized events like tree plantings and video tributes, as well as local news to confirm the names of those killed in Ukraine.
The standards for additions are high

The standards for adding a name to the list of Russian war dead are stringent according to Mediazona. It noted that a confirmed death requires an official publication or social media post from a relative with the relevant details, photos, and dates of burial from local messaging groups or cemetery photos.
Comments from the creators

“This project was not designed to handle a death toll on this scale. In the early days of the invasion, we imagined it might include a few thousand names. Instead, it has now passed one hundred thousand,” Mediazona explained.
A database as an act of accountability

“The Russian government continues to hide the true scale of its losses. This database stands as a rare reality check. For us, it’s an act of public accountability, both an archive and a form of resistance,” Mediazona added.
Russian losses according to Ukraine

As of May 12th, the Ukrainian General Staff reported that Russia has suffered 967,060 losses since February 24th, 2022. However, this estimate does not distinguish between those wounded or killed in action.
