Film company defends “The Salt Path” movie after bestselling book's author is accused of embezzlement, deception
Raynor Winn is defending herself against a media report that she was arrested on suspicion of stealing funds from her employer, a matter that was later settled.

The producers of the 2024 movie The Salt Path have defended it against recent allegations made about the internationally bestselling book on which it is based.
"There were no known claims against the book at the time of optioning it or producing and distributing the film,” a spokeswoman for Number 9 Films and Shadowplay Features told Deadline.
The film is "a faithful adaptation of the book that we optioned," she said. "We undertook all necessary due diligence before acquiring the book."
In a story published July 5 in The Observer, which was headlined, "The real Salt Path: how a blockbuster book and film were spun from lies, deceit and desperation," the publication alleged that Raynor had omitted some information from her true-life tale of her and her husband taking a trip along the coast after losing their home and, along the way, learning of a scary medical diagnosis for him.

Raynor was accused of having been dishonest about facts, including the way the author and her husband, Moth Winn — whose real names are allegedly Sally and Tim Walker — found themselves without a home. While Raynor had said the couple were taken advantage of by a friend, The Observer quotes Ros Hemmings, who claims that Raynor was arrested after having stolen money from Hemmings' husband.
"We kept looking back [through the accounts]," Hemmings told the publication. "In the end, I think it was around £64,000 [approximately $87,240] she'd nicked over the previous few years."
The report also raises questions about Moth's CBD (Corticobasal Degeneration) diagnosis, a progressive neurological disorder that has an average life expectancy of 6-8 years, according to neurologists the Observer spoke with. Moth claims to have been living with the condition for 18 years.

Producers of the movie version of the story, which costars Jason Isaacs and Gillian Anderson, said in that statement the issue was not theirs.
"The allegations made in The Observer relate to the book and are a matter for the author Raynor Winn," the statement concluded. "We have passed any correspondence relating to the article to Raynor and her agent."
The producers learned about what was alleged in the story "at the end of last week" when reporter Chloe Hadjimatheou reached out to them, Deadline reported.
After the Observer's article was published, the charity PSPA — which supports people with CBD and has worked with Raynor and Moth — released a statement about the allegations against the couple, saying that "too many questions currently remain unanswered."
"We received the family's need for support, and desire to raise awareness of PSP & CBD in good faith," the statement reads. "Whilst we are thankful for the awareness opportunities their story has provided; too many questions currently remain unanswered. Therefore, we have made the decision to terminate our relationship with the family."
In a statement to Entertainment Weekly via literary agents at Graham Maw Christie, Raynor said, "The Observer article is highly misleading. We are taking legal advice and won't be making any further comment at this time."
The film "lays bare the physical and spiritual journey Moth and I shared, an experience that transformed us completely and altered the course of our lives," she continued. "This is the true story of our journey."
EW has also reached out to the film company for comment.
The Salt Path was published in March 2018 and has sold over two million copies since. Universally well-received among critics, the memoir was shortlisted for the Wainwright Prize and the Costa Book Awards in 2018 and won the RSL Christopher Bland Prize in 2019.
The Marianne Elliott-directed film adaptation, which also stars James Lance and Hermione Norris, was released in UK theaters on May 30. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics and moviegoers, the film has earned over $15 million at the box office. The movie has yet to be released in key territories, including Germany and France, while a deal is reportedly still pending for a release in the U.S.

Isaacs spoke to The Hollywood Reporter during the film's premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2024, where he complimented Moth for wanting to "lift everybody around him."
He added, "Even though, quite often with me, he was describing the most unconscionable things and indignities he's had to face. I felt like I just had to get out of the way and try to tell Moth's story and their story of what happened to them. So any praise that comes back is really just admiration for them, who they are, and what they did."
