Combat footage recorded on the frontlines of the war in Ukraine captured an interesting incident that saw Ukrainian Defense Forces repel a powerful Russian tank assault near the embattled stronghold of Toretsk in the Donetsk region.

Soldiers from the 28th Mechanized Brigade published combat footage from the assault on their official Facebook page. The video captured an intense frontline battle that saw two Russian tanks routed and destroyed after attempting a breakthrough.

According to a report from the Ukrainian military website Miltiarnyi, the region that came under attack by the Russian tanks has been subjected to “relentless small-group attacks for months.” However, in this attack, Russian forces went all in.

The decision to make a decisive push in the area was made, which led to a situation on the morning of July 9th where soldiers of the 3rd Mechanized Battalion, a unit within the 28th Mechanized Brigade, spotted advancing tanks and infantry.

Russian forces reportedly launched an assault to break through and push forward in the region using another small group approach. However, the Ukrainian soldiers on this part of the frontline didn’t give the attacking Russians any opportunities.

The Russian tanks were quickly attacked by artillery once they were spotted, which can be seen in the video published by the 28th Mechanized Brigade. The Russian assault force was attacked by drone pilots from the Unmanned Systems Forces as well.

Operators from the Kurt & Company unit, R.V. unit of the 3rd Mechanized Battalion, and other supporting units joined in on the action and helped the Ukrainian defense according to Militarnyi. Attack drones were used to attack the advancing Russian armor, which did a great deal of damage.

“After several strikes, the tanks tried to move along the forest belts to safely deploy infantry among the greenery. But the Knights hit hard – with FPV drones, bomber drones, and even AI-powered drones,” the 28th Mechanized Brigade explained.

Both tanks were taken out

According to Militarnyi, the entire Russian assault group was eliminated. One of the two tanks was completely destroyed in the engagement, while the second was hit by drones several times and rendered inoperable.

The battle took place near the village of Dyliivka, which is just outside the city of Toretsk. Russian and Ukrainian forces have been fighting for control of Toretsk since June 2024. Dyliivka is an important stronghold that shields Ukraine from further Russian advances in Donetsk.
