Top 9+ planned spin-off shows we’ll never get to see and why
- 1. Bloodmoon - Game of Thrones spin-off
- 2. Billie Jenkins - Charmed spin-off
- 3. Girlfriends - Friends spin-off
- 4. Aquaman - Smallville spin-off
- 5. Windward Circle - Gilmore Girls spinoff
- 6. Valley Girls - Gossip Girl spin-off
- 7. The O.C. spinoff
- 8. Glee spin-off
- 9. Witchright Hall - Sabrina the Teenage Witch

Spin-off shows can go one of two ways: they're either just as good as (if not better than) the original, or they completely flop. While Frasier, a spin-off of the popular series Cheers, won 37 Emmy Awards, Joey, an extension of the beloved Friends, didn't fare so well. The same goes for Baywatch Nights and That '80s Show, to name a few. However, you can't say that they didn't try. Here, we explore 10 spin-off shows that never even stood a chance because despite plans for production, they never got made. From another Friends show starring a different cast member, to a Game of Thrones would-have-been, let's take a look at what we could have had. It's up to you to decide whether the right decision was made or not… (Picture: Warner Bros Tv/Kobal/REX/Shutterstock)
1. Bloodmoon - Game of Thrones spin-off

Bloodmoon was the working title for a cancelled Game of Thrones prequel series. It was meant to be based thousands of years before the main show (which was already set during the medieval period). As for the premise, it explored the origins of the White Walkers and the events of the first Long Night. There was actually a pilot episode filmed, but HBO decided to ditch it altogether due to a negative reception (Picture: HBO)
2. Billie Jenkins - Charmed spin-off

In the final season of Charmed, Kaley Cuoco joined as Billie Jenkins, a new witch who had the potential to lead a spin-off series. The show was considered for a while, with Kaley's character being written with this idea in mind. However, the show's cancellation and the network's decision to focus on other projects were what led to it being ditched (Picture: mitchell haddad)
3. Girlfriends - Friends spin-off

We already mentioned Joey, which, as we all know, didn't go exactly to plan. Plus, with Friends being one of the most popular sitcoms of all time, you can almost feel that a different spin-off wouldn't have been received in the same way. In terms of this show, it was set to follow Phoebe and her new friendship with Charlie Wheeler, the ex-partner of both Joey and Ross. This does sound a little confusing, considering it would have made more sense to focus on her new life with husband, Mike. Anyhow, it never materialised, mostly due to execs developing Joey (Picture: NBCUniversal via Getty Images)
4. Aquaman - Smallville spin-off

In 2006, a pilot episode for an Aquaman series, separate from Smallville but with connections to the show's universe, was filmed. Justin Hartley starred as Arthur "AC" Curry. However, it was not picked up by The CW, the newly merged network that replaced the WB and UPN. Possible reasons for the cancellation include a change of programming focus (Picture: Warner Bros Tv/Kobal/Shutterstock)
5. Windward Circle - Gilmore Girls spinoff

Loved the Gilmore Girls and loved Jess Mariano? If so, you were stripped of a spin-off based on the character. The show was supposed to be set away from the fictional Stars Hollow, in Venice Beach, California. As for the premise, it would have explored Jess' relationship with his dad, Jimmy. A backdoor pilot episode in season 3, called 'Here Comes the Son,' was what inspired the spin-off idea. Unfortunately, budget concerns due to filming in California led to the series being dropped (Picture: Warner Br/Everett/REX/Shutterstock)
6. Valley Girls - Gossip Girl spin-off

Valley Girls was pitched as a Gossip Girl prequel, but also doubled as a Gossip Girl episode. The episodes would have followed Lily Rhodes and her high school experience, while living with Carol in 1980s Los Angeles. Despite some initial excitement, the show failed to spark enough interest from CW executives to be picked up (Picture: Timothy White/Cw Network/Kobal/REX/Shutterstock)
7. The O.C. spinoff

According to industry rumours, plans for a The O.C. spin-off were floated around. Described as a 'TV version of Mean Girls,' it was set to drop in 2006 and follow Kaitlyn Cooper at boarding school. Despite interest and consideration, it never made it to the production stage
8. Glee spin-off

Glee creator Ryan Murphy revealed that he'd developed a spin-off idea to follow Rachel, Kurt, and Finn to New York City after their graduation from McKinley High. However, multiple factors affected this, including a decline in the original show's popularity, but also Cory Monteith's tragic death in 2013 (Picture: FOX Image Collection)
9. Witchright Hall - Sabrina the Teenage Witch

Sabrina the Teenage Witch fans will remember the Witchright Hall episode, which was also created as a backdoor pilot for a spin-off series. It would focus on Sabrina's cousin, Amanda Wiccan, and her experiences at Witchright Hall, a school for 'maladjusted young witches' in the mortal realm. The series was not picked up by The WB (Picture: Abc/Viacom/Kobal/REX/Shutterstock)
