Cannes Film Festival 2025 in Photos: Bono, Kristen Stewart, ‘The Chronology of Water' & ‘Eddington' Premieres

The 78th Annual Cannes Film Festival

The 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival continues on Day 4 with the world premieres of Eddington, directed by Ari Aster; Bono: Stories of Surrender, and Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut, The Chronology of Water.

Aster’s Eddington premiered today, featuring Joaquin Phoenix as a small-town Sheriff in a New Mexico conflict with Pedro Pascal’s Mayor. The film’s ensemble cast includes Joaquin Phoenix, Austin Butler, Emma Stone, Pedro Pascal, Luke Grimes, Clifton Collins Jr., Micheal Ward, Amelie Hoeferle, Matt Gomez Hidaka, and Cameron Mann, who all walked the red carpet at the Grand Théâtre Lumière on Friday, May 16th

The Palais des Festivals played host this evening to the debut of Kristen Stewart’s The Chronology of Water, starring Imogen Poots, Thora Birch, Michael Epp, Esmé Creed-Miles, Kim Gordon, and Jim Belushi.

The film follows Lidia Yuknavitch, a woman seemingly fated for a path of self-destruction and failure, having been raised in a world fractured by violence and the haze of alcohol. Adapted from her powerful autobiographical bestseller, this charts Lidia’s unexpected liberation through language, as literature becomes her unlikely sanctuary.

It intimately follows her journey to discover her own distinct voice, delving into the profound ways trauma can be alchemized into art. This exploration examines the act of reclaiming our deeply personal and often painful histories, with a particular lens on the unique experiences etched onto the bodies of women and girls.

Joining the cohort of first-time directors at Cannes, Scarlett Johansson and Harris Dickinson will each premiere their feature directorial debuts. Johansson’s Eleanor The Great, a film starring June Squibb as the witty and proudly troublesome 94-year-old Eleanor Morgenstein, and Dickinson’s Urchin features Frank Dillane as a London drifter navigating societal displacement.

Premieres today include La Petite Derniére, The Wave by Sebastián Lelio, Bono: Stories of Surrender by Andrew Dominik, and Sons of the Neon Night by Juno Mak. Earlier pressers and photocalls included Sirât, Dossier 137, Arco, Amrum, The Plague, and The Mysterious Gaze Of The Flamingo.

Over the next two weeks, this jury, led by Juliette Binoche, will evaluate the 21 films in competition and award the Palme d’Or, Grand Prix, Jury Prize, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Actor. The winners will be announced at the closing ceremony on May 24, immediately followed by the screening of Momoko Sato’s Dandelion’s Odyssey.
