Urgent recall for coffee pods because they may contain ink

A popular coffee brand is recalling dozens of its single-serve pods over fears they are contaminated with ink. New Mexico Pinon Coffee is recalling 154 units of its Dark Pinon Single Serve Cups, which come in 10-count packs. They are single serve Keurig cups filled with ground coffee with natural flavorings. The company issued the voluntary recall after discovering a mishap in the packaging process, according to an announcement by the nation's agency responsible for protecting the public health. 'Clear coat seal on the lid of the single serve cups did not get applied consistently to all cups in the production run,' states US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notice. 'This resulted in the food safe ink printing on some cups to run when exposed to high temperature, high-pressure water used in a K-cup machine.' (Picture: Getty Images)

New Mexico Pinon Coffee, which is based in Albuquerque, initiated the recall on June 20. 'This recall is being made because of the potential introduction of food coloring into the cup during brewing,' stated the company in a letter. 'Although New Mexico Pinon Coffee has not received any reports of Illness or Injury associated with this product, we are voluntarily recalling this product out an abundance of caution.'

The affected coffee pods were sold nationwide. They have the product number F03308, UPC number 812361033081, and lot code 251749. The best buy date is May 8, 2026. (Picture: Getty Images)

The FDA designated it as a Class III recall on July 15. The agency defines that recall level as 'a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences'. The recall is ongoing. (Picture: Getty Images)

Customers should throw away the pods or return them to the place where they purchased them from for a refund. Anyone with questions should call New Mexico Pinon Coffee. No other products by the company are affected. (Picture: Getty Images)

It comes after numerous recalls for other drink products in the US. In June, the FDA announced a recall for more than 19,000 cans of Dr Pepper Zero Sugar because they could contain sugar. And in March, more than 10,000 cans of Coca-Cola were recalled over fears that they could have plastic. (Picture: Getty Images)
