After cancelling a string of gigs, Jason Manford has revealed that he was struck with appendicitis while driving at 70mph on a motorway, and has undergone surgery.

The comedian, 44, posted a picture on social media from a hospital bed and told fans of his ‘painful and scary’ 24 hours, which also saw him collapse on the floor in the hospital’s waiting room.

‘Appendix surgery all went well, now in recovery with my Vimto, they serve it in all Manchester hospitals,’ he said, with a laughing emoji.

‘Bit of a scary & extremely painful 24 hours but thankful to our NHS & my incredible nurse mum who’s a godsend in a health crisis!

‘My advice would be to not get Appendicitis whilst driving at 70mph on the motorway!

‘Seriously though, I’m gutted that I’ve had to move the dates this weekend, and I’m sorry for the late notice to so many people in St Albans, Oxford, Lincoln, Skegness & at Kendall Calling.

‘I thought I could get by on antibiotics and surgery at a later date so I could still do the shows, but was advised not to.

‘Also means I can’t fly out to Portugal on Monday to join my family on holiday! 😭 Ah well, such is life. Thanks for all the ‘Get Well Soon’ messages.’

Support had flooded in, including from the likes of actor Daniel Mays, Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies and John Bishop, who joked: ‘That smock suits you’.

When fan Noreen Saurin sent him a get well soon message and observed ‘funny how quick it can hit you, you were in flying form in Drogheda last Thursday’, Jason responded, sharing further dramatic detail of how quickly he was affected.

‘I was literally filming stuff until 2pm yesterday and 3pm it hit me by 5pm I had collapsed on the hospital waiting room floor! Madness,’ he replied.

The comic initially cancelled a Wednesday night performance of his show, A Manford All Seasons, in Hertfordshire, rescheduling the date for October.

This was followed up by a post to his X earlier today, cancelling a further three performances taking place over the coming days in Oxford, Lincoln and Skegness.

‘We regret to inform you that the following performances of A Manford All Seasons have been unexpectedly cancelled due to Jason Manford being unwell. Oxford, New Theatre Lincoln, The Engine Shed Skegness, Embassy Hall.

‘We apologise for any inconvenience caused,’ the post read on his social media.

Many more fans shared their well wishes for the comedian on Instagram, where he has over 440k followers.

‘l hope whatever it is buggers off sharpish,’ jojosmithuk wrote.

‘Hope all ok Jason. Wishing you a speedy recovery,’ paul281270 added.

‘Get well soon Jason Manford, I’m sure no-one is more gutted than you, and for you to cancel the rest of this week means you must be really sick.

Hope you’re home now to rest up properly? Take care fella,’ daviddavensac added.

‘One of the hardest working men I know of, to be cancelling so many shows, he must be really poorly bless him x Hope you are feeling better soon,’ shelbychad78 agreed.

‘Feel better soon Jason, take care and look after yourself,’ 56suef echoed.

The UK-wide tour is set to go on until the end of March next year, concluding at Walthamstow’s newly-opened Soho Theatre.

What is appendicitis?

Appendicitis is swelling and infection in your appendix (part of your bowel). It usually causes pain in the lower right side of your abdomen (tummy). It needs urgent treatment in hospital.

Symptoms

Symptoms include pain in the tummy around the belly button. It then usually moves to the lower right side of the abdomen, and gets worse. Pain severity changes from person to person.

Other symptoms of appendicitis can include:

  • feeling or being sick, or loss of appetite
  • a high temperature
  • constipation or diarrhoea
  • peeing more than usual
  • sudden confusion (in older people)

Treatment

Appendicitis is usually treated with surgery to remove your appendix (an appendectomy). You do not need your appendix, so it’s not harmful to remove it.

If you need surgery, it will be done as soon as possible, but you may need to wait a few hours. The operation usually takes about an hour.

The Manchester-born entertainer has done the rounds of the British media industry, starring as a headteacher on Waterloo Road and appearing in shows like Channel 4’s 8 out of 10 Cats.

And enjoyed positive reviews for his current tour with the Evening Standard declaring he ‘excels at a cheeky brand of observational wit which everyone should appreciate’ in their four-star review.

In a recent interview, Manford spoke about the real risks the arts currently faces in shutting out people from a working-class background.

‘We’ll end up in a situation where the only people who are performing as actors, singers, comedians or musicians are people who can afford it,” Manford told BBC Essex.

Then continued: The arts are what separates us from the animals, this is the thing that makes us human and it’s important to keep it going.’
