Penny Wong tries to tell off Jacinta Price over Welcome to Country criticism

Opposition Senate Leader Michaelia Cash dealt the blow in the Senate on Thursday in response to an address by Ms Wong.

Ms Wong urged the opposition to 'respect' parliamentary traditions in response to comments from Ms Price objecting to the ceremonies.

She advised the members opposite to consider the words of Opposition Leader Sussan Ley who appeared to support a ceremony delivered on Tuesday.

'I would hope that the Opposition would reflect on the words of their own leader in relation to Welcomes to Country,' Ms Wong said.

She added: 'Decency and respect cost us nothing, but it goes a long way to building a sense of unity.'

In response, Ms Cash accused Ms Wong of having 'sought to dismiss' Ms Price's objection to the ceremonies as a person of Indigenous heritage.

'I will stand by and respect Senator Nampijinpa Price who every day has lived and breathed reconciliation in this country - her father is white her mother is black.'

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson led a silent protest during an Acknowledgement to Country ceremony on Tuesday

'Please don't ever come into this place again and pontificate to us like you've just done.'

Ms Price had earlier objected to the ceremonies, claiming they did little to improve the lives of Indigenous Australians and were a form of 'political point scoring'.

'To be quite honest, as a woman of Indigenous heritage but first and foremost as an Australian I am absolutely done with the virtue-signalling that takes place.'

Ms Cash encouraged the chamber to study Ms Price's Indigenous heritage as the daughter of an Aboriginal Australian activist.

'I suggest you read the story of Bess Price before you ever come in here and cast aspersions or tell us, Senator Wong to respect others words,' she said.

On Thursday, 2GB Breakfast host Ben Fordham referred to Ms Cash's 'almighty spray' as among the best parliamentary takedowns in 'a long time'.

'Michaelia Cash reminded parliament that Jacinta Price has every right to her opinion and she doesn't need a condescending lecture from Penny Wong or anyone else just for expressing it.

'As far as parliamentary sprays go, that was a ten.'

Ms Hanson, together with three other One Nation senators, turned her back while a statement of respect for Indigenous Australians was read in parliament on Tuesday.

Ms Ley urged MPs to let the Welcome to Country 'set the tone' for the next Parliament following a ceremony commemorating the opening of the 48th Parliament on Tuesday.

Her public support for the ceremonies sets her at odds with Ms Cash, the Senate Leader and second highest-ranking woman in the Liberal Party.

Ms Cash on Thursday expressed her support for two motions prepared for the Liberal Party of Western Australia to strip welcome to country speeches of 'official status'.

They would also require only commonwealth and state flags to be displayed at government events, rather than Indigenous flags.

'It has been my long-held belief that there is one national flag and we should all unite under it,' Ms Cash told The Australian.

'Formal commonwealth recognition should only be given to flags representing official jurisdictions or government institutions.

'On the Welcome To Country issue my position is consistent with the motion.'
