'Being her mother-in-law is a role I'm glad I lost' Denise Welch throws shade at Taylor Swift
Imagine losing the icon that is Denise Welch as your mother-in-law, and as if that wasn't a low enough blow, she then throws serious shade at you on live TV.
Taylor Swift's in a spot of hot water she probably didn't expect to find herself in, over two years after her split from The 1975 frontman Matty Healy, who is the eldest son and pride and joy of Denise.
The ex-couple dated for a brief time in 2023, and, in typical Taylor fashion, an album about their whirlwind romance, The Tortured Poets Department, followed swiftly afterward in April 2024.

While Taylor has never explicitly said tracks on TTPD were written about her romance with Matty, fans put two and two together, and we can understand why Matty (and Denise) might've gotten the hump over it as there are some pretty damning lyrics in there.
One such track is The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived - oof! - in which Taylor sings: 'A message to the smallest man who ever lived / You hung me on your wall / Stabbed me with your push pins / In public, showed me off / Then sank in stoned oblivion.'

Matty never rose to Taylor's level and has remained publicly tight-lipped about their romance, but now his feisty mum Denise has took it upon herself to have the last laugh, in the most Denise Welch way possible.
During her appearance on Watch What Happens Live, host Andy Cohen asked the Loose Women panelist: 'Miss Swift wrote a whole album about their relationship, TTPD, what was your reaction?'

Remaining calm and composed, Denise told him: 'Obviously on pain of death can I talk about that episode, but not being her mother-in-law is a role that I am glad that I lost.'
This damning statement was met with shocked noises from the audience, and the Coronation Street actress was quick to say: 'Not that I have anything against her at all, it was just, you know, it was tricky.'

'Listen, you're not allowed to say anything, and then she writes a whole album about it,' Denise continued, seemingly insinuating that Matty was silenced from speaking out about their relationship.
'But Matty is taking it all completely in good grace. He's very happy with his amazing fiancée Gabriette, who is gorgeous. So, we've moved on,' she concluded with a cheeky smile and side eye.
We've not seen such blatant, serious shade thrown in a while, and Denise's ballsy comments have honestly left us giggling and kicking our feet in delight!
