3M Open cut line tracker: Here's who missed the weekend at TPC Twin Cities

The 3M Open doesn't have the big-name roster that last week's British Open did, but it does have a field of 156 PGA Tour pros fighting for a payday.

There's also a long list of golfers near the 70th spot in the FedEx Cup Playoffs standings. That's an important number this year as only the top 70 advance. A year ago, it was 100.

Some of those players who arrived at TPC Twin Cities in need of points were sent home emptyhanded when the cut came in at 5 under, with the leader, Thorbjorn Olesen, at 14 under.

Rickie Fowler, Max Homa make the cut at the 3M Open

After going 3-over on the front nine, Rickie Fowler fired a 4-under 32 coming in to surge past the cut line and into a tie for 32nd at 7 under par, two clear of missing the weekend. It was an impressive feat for Fowler, who looked dead in the water after a double bogey on the par-4 ninth set him back to three under.

Meanwhile, Max Homa had a very similar performance Friday, just not quite as dramatic as his SoCal brethren Rickie. Homa was 1 over through four holes and looked like he could be in for a long day before making back-to-back birdies on Nos. 6 and 7 as well as Nos. 12 and 13. A bogey on the par-5 18th took him out of the top 20, but he still enters the weekend at 8 under with a chance to make some noise.

As expected, the cutline moved to 5 under. It's almost certain to stay there.

Can Rickie get in? He'll need a big back nine

After taking a double on No. 9, Rickie Fowler has some work to do to get on the right side of the cut line.

Fowler is at 4 under for the tournament as of 5 p.m., which likely won't get him to the weekend. He made a birdie at 11, but will need to go at least 1 under down the last stretch of seven holes to survive.

Update: 3 p.m. ET, expected cut settling in at 5 under

The expected cut is now settling in at 5 under as of 3 p.m., with Datagolf.com saying it's got a 77 percent chance of landing there. That means a number of players who are still playing and are hovering around 4 under need to do some work to avoid being sent home early.

Max Homa, Cam Champ, Max Greyserman and Greyson Sigg are in that group. The quartet will likely need to find some strokes to continue on.

Keith Mitchell's late meltdown cost him dearly

It appeared Keith Mitchell would be around for the weekend as he sat at 7 under through 15 holes of play on Friday, but disaster struck as he took a triple with a pair of penalties and fell on what's expected to be the wrong side of the cut.

Mitchell, who started on the back, pulled his drive and then his next drop into the pond on the 377-yard par-4 7th hole, falling to 4 over for the tournament. He added a three-putt bogey on the final hole of the day to finish at 3 under for 36 holes.

And the meltdown also harms his chances to reach the FedEx Cup playoffs. In the most recent projections, Mitchell falls out of the top 70.

Adam Scott looks in good position after late run

When Adam Scott made bogey on both his 10th and 12th holes (he started on the back), it looked like he might miss the cut, but the 14-time PGA Tour champ responded with birdies on three of four holes and came to his final hole of the day at 6 under.

Scott's second shot into the 9th hole wasn't one he loved, as he pushed it well right, but he two-putted to likely clinch a spot in the third round.

Update: 1 p.m. ET, the expected cut is now either 5 or 6 under

As scores dip a bit, the chances the cut gets to 6 under are now significant, somewhere in the 40 percent range as of 1 p.m.

That means Andrew Putnam, who shot a 68 but sits at 4 under, is in jeopardy, while others like Keith Mitchell (4 under after 17), MacKenzie Hughes (4 under through 14) and Jhonattan Vegas (4 under through 15) are all teetering.

The trio of Haotong Li, Austin Eckroat and Davis Riley are all 4 under for the day and at 1 p.m., they're a 5 under.

Update: 11:45 p.m. ET, the expected cut is now 5 under

The official projection per the PGA Tour is now 4 under par, but according to Datagolf.com, that number is 60 percent expected to go to 5 under by day's end.

That means players like Jhonattan Vegas and Joel Dahmen, both 4 under at 11:45 a.m. ET, will likely need to pick up another stroke to make it to the third round. Those in real trouble include Ryan Palmer and Chez Reavie, both 1 over around the midpoint of their rounds. Also, Brandt Snedeker is even for the tournament through his 10th hole on Friday and is a long shot to make it.

Early official projection is 3 under, but likely to move

Although the early official projection at 8:30 a.m. ET is 3 under, Datagolf.com projects there's a good chance that will go as low as 6 under by day's end. Currently, there's a 30 percent chance the cut will move to 6, and a 42 percent chance it moves to 5 under.

Post-birthday, Sam Burns is making moves

Sam Burns celebrated his birthday on Wednesday, and his performance on Thursday was a little reflective as he trudged his way to an even-par 72.

But things were a little different on Friday, as the 29-year-old birdied four of his first eight holes to get to 4 under par. Although the cutline is still official 3 under as of 10:45 a.m., Burns will likely need another birdie or two on the card to reach the weekend.

Those in danger to start the day (as of 9 a.m.)

  • Webb Simpson, 3 under
  • Jhonattan Vegas, 3 under
  • Harry Higgs, 3 under
  • Camilo Villegas, 3 under
  • Taylor Pendrith, 3 under
