Top 10+ rudest cities in Canada revealed – is your hometown on the list?

Canada isn't renowned for being a particularly rude place. If anything, Canadians are known for being kind, polite, civil, and patient. However, recent research from Preply, an online tutoring service based in the North American country, has suggested that this might not be universally true. Their team surveyed more than 1,500 residents of 44 of the largest cities in Canada to see if any of them possessed rude traits. From common rude behaviour to how often they swear, they also pressed them on Canada's 'polite' stereotype (Picture: Getty Images)

The data was then curated to crown the rudest (and most polite) cities on a scale of one to 10, with ten being the rudest. According to Preply, the most common behaviours considered rude in Canada include 'being absorbed by your phone in public, being noisy in public and not letting people merge in traffic.' Keen to find out if your hometown makes the worst offenders list? Here's the ranking of the rudest Canadian cities (Picture: Getty Images)
10. Winnipeg

Rudeness score: 6.24/10
Winnipeg, the capital of the Canadian province of Manitoba, just about made the 'most rude' top 10. The city scored the highest for being the most likely to make noise in public - scoring five out of 10. Aside from being a loud city, Winnipeg is known for its vibrant arts scene, colourful festivals, sprawling green spaces and characterful neighbourhoods

9. Sudbury

Rudeness score: 6.41/10
Next up is Sudbury, a city in Ontario. With a rudeness score of 6.41, it's markedly higher than Winnipeg's. Sudbury is arguably the hard rock mining capital of the world and is worlds away from the big city rat race. Focus on the outdoors is big business here, from hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, canoeing and kayaking. Walking, running and cycling are popular too, due to the many trail systems

8. Edmonton

Rudeness score: 6.54/10
Edmonton comes next, with a slightly higher score of 6.54. As the capital city of the Canadian province of Alberta, its extremely low crime levels might make up for its rudeness. It's one of the safer places to live compared to other Canadian cities. And, while residents might be ruder than in Markham (Canada's most polite city), they're active and healthy. This is thanks to the numerous parks, trails, and outdoor spaces available, including the river valley

7. Regina

Rudeness score: 6.54/10
Regina is the capital city of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Perhaps there's a link between the city sharing the same name as pop culture villain Regina George from Mean Girls. And, in an even creepier twist, Regina is the rudest city for not letting people merge into traffic, with a score of 4.90. Mean Girls fans will know that Regina famously got hit by a school bus in the film. Coincidence? We think not… Regina also scored joint third with Chatham Kent and Gatineau for being the city that swears the most. Apparently, residents release profanities 13 times a day

6. Thunder Bay

Rudeness score: 6.71/10
Maybe this is another namesake destined to be a rude place. With a higher score of 6.71 out of 10, this city in Lake Superior, northwestern Ontario, has just avoided the top five. Jokes aside, the name Thunder City is much more likely aligned with the fact that it's known as one of Canada's greatest 'outdoor cities.' But ironically, it's also considered one of the sunniest cities in eastern Canada

5. Windsor

Rudeness score: 6.88/10
At number five is Windsor in Ontario. It sits just across the Detroit River from the US city of Detroit. The city serves as the proud 'International Gateway' between Canada and the United States of America. According to the City of Windsor tourism page, Windsor boasts an 'incredible community that offers world-class entertainment, fascinating historical and cultural landmarks, and unparalleled waterfront parks and gardens.' Doesn't sound that rude to us…

4. Surrey

Rudeness score: 6.91/10
Surrey is in British Columbia. It's the province's second-largest by population after Vancouver, and is mostly suburban. The climate is also mild, as it's close to Vancouver. Discover Surrey says the city is known for its 'rich multicultural food scene,' with a Spice Trail that showcases flavours from around the world. Surrey enjoys vibrant cultural events like Fusion Festival, the Cloverdale Rodeo, and Country Fair that 'promote the city's diversity.' Again, how is this place rude?

3. Brampton

Rudeness score: 7.05/10
Into the top three now, and Brampton third spot with a rudeness score of 7.05. Located in Ontario’s Greater Toronto Area, the city scored second place on Preply's separate rudest cities in the Greater Toronto Area list. Once more, it's hard to picture somewhere with the nickname 'Flower City' as rude, but we guess we have to trust to research… (Picture: Getty Images)
2. Coquitlam

Rudeness score: 7.85/10
You'll find Coquitlam in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. Not quite breaking into 8 territory, Coquitlam's final ranking stands at 7.85. Interestingly, Coquitlam has one of the lowest crime rates in Metro Vancouver. It's also a family-friendly city and offers a more affordable lifestyle, especially in terms of housing, than Vancouver

1. Vaughan

Rudeness score: 8.05/10
And last but certainly not least, Vaughan takes the crown for the rudest city in Canada. The city in Ontario is located just north of Toronto, meaning it also topped the rudest cities in the Greater Toronto Area list. In addition, Vaughan was voted as the city most likely to be absorbed by phone in public, scoring 6.77 out of 10. Despite this, the city has plenty of positive attributes, including LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Toronto, Reptilia and Black Creek Pioneer Village. Plus, Vaughan Mills is the largest indoor complex in the nation (Picture: Getty Images)
