Some titles were changed for surprising reasons

Movie titles can change multiple times through their development from script to screen, sometimes at the screenplay or production phase, and even, sometimes, after the release. There are multiple examples in Hollywood of films that had their titles changed for one reason or another.

'Deadpool & Friend'

Wolverine fans certainly wouldn't be happy with this title if the movie came out with it in 2024. But actor Ryan Reynolds also expressed his discontent with the title during production, and it was eventually changed to 'Deadpool & Wolverine.'

'All You Need Is Kill'

This is actually the name of a sci-fi novel by Japanese author Hiroshi Sakurazaka, so the movie had to be retitled. Director Doug Liman came up with 'Live Die Repeat,' but that was eventually used as a tag line rather than the actual title, which ended up being 'Edge of Tomorrow' (2014).

'Killing Mrs. Tingle'

The title sounded woefully inappropriate after the Columbine High School Massacre took place in Colorado in 1999, the same year as the film's release. 'Killing Mrs. Tingle' was renamed 'Teaching Mrs. Tingle.'

'Murderer Among Us'

Director Fritz Lang had to change the title of his 1931 film after the Nazi Party censored his original choice. After all, it could have been interpreted as a criticism of the Nazis. The movie was renamed 'M.'

'Neighborhood Watch'

The 2012 movie starring Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill, Richard Ayoade, and Vince Vaughn was originally called 'Neighborhood Watch.' A real-life event prompted the change to 'The Watch,' after 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was murdered by former neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman.

'3000'

The famous rom-com was supposed to be called '3000.' This was a reference to the amount of money paid for a week in the company of Julia Roberts' character. The movie was then renamed 'Pretty Woman' (1990) after the famous Roy Orbison song.

'Scary Movie'

The famous slasher movie 'Scream' (1996) was originally titled 'Scary Movie.' Ironically, the title was adopted by the parody franchise that followed years later.

'Wiseguy'

Martin Scorsese first named his most iconic movie 'Wiseguy' after Nicholas Pileggi's book. However, the director and the author decided to change the movie title to 'Goodfellas' (1990).

'The Lunch Bunch'

'The Lunch Bunch' was the original title of the cult classic 'The Breakfast Club.' Director John Hughes changed it after hearing the term from a friend's high school detention group that referred to detention as 'The Breakfast Club' (1985).

'Story of Your Life'

Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi movie was first named 'Story of Your Life,' but producer Shawn Levy thought it sounded "a bit like a One Direction song," and that "it doesn’t really skew or service the sci-fi tension of the movie." The film was renamed 'Arrival' and released in 2016.

'It Had to Be Jew'

Woody Allen almost named his famous 1977 film starring Diane Keaton 'It Had to Be Jew,' but in the end, he went with 'Annie Hall.'

'Head Cheese'

'Head Cheese'probably wouldn't have had the same impact as 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,' but it was indeed the original title of the 1974 horror classic.

'Love Hurts'

'Love Hurts' was the original working title of the screenplay of the 1992 thriller starring Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone. Before the movie went into production, it was renamed 'Basic Instinct.'
