Vintage pics of puppies of days past

Nothing warms the heart and calms the mind quite like a soft, furry puppy. Ever since man's best friend was first domesticated as early as 29,000 years ago, dogs have been keeping us company through the best and the worst of times. Lots of us are lucky to see dogs almost every day, either in our own homes or walking down the street, in all of their bright and smelly glory. But what about puppies from years past? Could they possibly have been just as cute, too? The following photos make a strong argument that yes, they absolutely were.

A concerned mother

Taken around 1905, this photograph shows a little girl gingerly taking care of three puppies so young their eyes haven't even opened yet. Her dedication to the young pups is written across her face.
The dynamic duo

How did these two end up here? Perhaps guess when you look as cute as they do, the "how" doesn't matter so much. The chimp seems to be pretty confident in its balance, and is sure to protect its little friend from harm.
Every boy's dream

There's probably nowhere else in the world this French boy would rather be. With one puppy in tow and another nine patiently waiting their turn, what more could he ask for?

Apparently it's not just human children who refuse to cooperate for the family portrait. While the parent here is looking front and center, the puppy has obviously spotted something more interesting.
A watchful protector

This French boy from 1897 is keeping a joyous and watchful eye over a couple of puppies so young they haven't opened their eyes yet. In just a few short years, surely those puppies will return the favor and watch over their young owner with loyalty.
A day at the salon

Every day is a good hair day when you're a Cocker Spaniel puppy! This handsome specimen's ears are looking particularly soft and fluffy after their blow-dry.
Kings of the street

These two Boston bull dogs look hard at work keeping their streets safe. Well, one of them does, at least. The other seems content playing in his soap box.
