Best Places to Buy a Mattress
Nearly 10,000 CR members shared their recent shopping experiences. Here are the mattress retailers that came out on top.

You have a better chance of being happy with a new mattress if you buy it from a reliable mattress retailer.
By Tanya A. Christian
Chances are, if you’re shopping for a mattress, you’re researching the pros and cons of a range of brands and models. But the truth is, where you shop for your mattress can also have an impact on your search for good sleep. After all, your choice of retailer determines the range of options to choose from, how knowledgeable the salespeople are, and how easy it is to return or exchange the mattress if you don’t like it.
That’s why the insights from Consumer Reports’ Mattress Retailers Survey can be so helpful. Our latest surveys of almost 10,000 CR members who bought a new mattress between 2024 and the first quarter of 2025 have feedback about their recent mattress-buying experiences, both online and in stores.
Members chimed in with their thoughts on a retailer’s mattress selection, prices, sales service, and customer support, as well as whether floor models were clean and delivery was on time. We also have ratings for web support and website usability.
Leveraging these responses, we created ratings for each of these areas for 25 retailers, including mattress-store chains (such as Mattress Firm), department stores (like Macy’s), and online platforms (such as Amazon). We also combined the survey responses for various local independent retailers to calculate ratings for those stores as a group. Each retailer was given an Overall Score, too.
Based on our survey responses, members found that buying a mattress, whether online or in a store, was a satisfying experience overall. Only 35 percent of the mattresses were purchased online, the lowest rate since 2018. The rate of online purchasing has continued its gradual decline since 2021. In that year’s ratings, it reached a high of 45 percent of all mattress purchases.
In this article, we highlight some of the best-rated mattress retailers. In addition to survey details about the store, we’ve included information on a top-performing mattress from our ratings sold there. (If you’d like to try these models in a store, see our mattress buying guide for advice on how to assess a mattress.)
CR members can read about the retailers in our comprehensive mattress store ratings. They can also learn about additional mattresses offered by these sellers in our comprehensive mattress ratings, which include more than 280 models. The Original Mattress Factory
The Original Mattress Factory is the highest-rated retailer in our ratings and the only retailer with an Overall Satisfaction Score in our top ratings tier. It excelled in sales service and customer support, and offers a solid selection of models as well. As for the cleanliness of the floor models and the quality and timeliness of the delivery service itself, CR members were extremely pleased.
While most of the retailers we assessed earned only lukewarm scores for the price of their mattress offerings, customers were actually happy with the prices at the Original Mattress Factory.
The Original Mattress Factory has more than 100 stores and 12 factory locations spanning from the East Coast to the Midwest, and it also sells its own mattresses and other mattress brands online (see the links in the description below). Purchases come with a one-year Comfort Policy that allows customers (for one time only) to return a mattress and select another model within the first year of purchase for a fee of 25 percent of the new mattress’s sale price.
The Original Mattress Factory Orthopedic Premier Super Pillow Top

The 15-inch-thick Orthopedic Premier Super Pillow Top is a side sleeper’s mattress, offering great support for all sizes, along with a cushy surface for their shoulders and hips to rest on. Back sleepers who are petite will find it supportive, too, but those who are of average height or taller can do much better elsewhere. (For instance, check out the Luxury Firm version of this model.) As with many innersprings, it’s not the best at motion isolation; you’ll feel it when your sleep partner tosses and turns. This mattress earns a solid rating for durability, but many other mattresses in our ratings do even better. Still, if you love a soft mattress, it may be worth giving this one a try; it lands a 3 out of 10 on our firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). The Original Mattress Factory’s innerspring mattresses got very good scores for both comfort and owner satisfaction, according to our member surveys.
Saatva
With less than 15 years in the mattress market, Saatva has become a favorite among CR members. While you can buy online, its mattresses arrive via a delivery truck, as opposed to being rolled up and shipped in a box.
Saatva earns very good marks for selection and website usability, and top marks for customer support, quality of delivery, and cleanliness.
Saatva offers eight adult mattresses, including the Saatva Classic innerspring, Solaire adjustable mattress, Loom & Leaf memory foam, and Zenhaven latex. (And there are mattresses for kids and babies, too.) Though it sells mattresses mainly on its website, you can also try them out in one of its 20 showrooms across the U.S.
Saatva Solaire

The Solaire mattress by Saatva is made with certified organic materials and is an all-around crowd-pleaser, with above-average results in just about every area, including nice support for all sleep positions and sizes, as well as good stabilization. It also excels when it comes to durability. As a brand, Saatva keeps its users quite content in terms of both comfort and owner satisfaction.
Jordan's Furniture
Our members were extremely satisfied with the customer support, plus the quality and timeliness of the delivery service. They were content with the service from the sales team, too. What’s more, they were happy about the selection and how clean the models appeared in the store.
The company offers a 100-night trial period for mattresses, including a 30-day adjustment period. If you’re not comfortable after the initial 30 days, you have an additional 70 days to exchange your mattress; the period begins on the date you receive your new mattress. Just know that to be eligible for the exchange, Jordan’s Furniture may also require that you purchase a stain-resistant mattress protector at the time of sale.
Macy's
Macy’s is a new entry in our roundup of top retailers. The company sells its mattresses online and at its 450 stores throughout the U.S., including Puerto Rico and Guam.
In our mattress surveys, CR members gave Macy’s very good scores for customer support. They also rated its delivery quality and timeliness as very good. Macy’s also landed strong ratings from members for its selection, but it was rated only middling for prices paid.
Macy’s offers a 120-night trial period for mattresses, allowing customers to exchange or return one within that time frame if they’re not satisfied. Customers must allow at least 30 nights for their bodies to adjust to the new mattress before initiating a return or exchange. But it’s worth noting that the return process includes a $99 pickup fee and a 15 percent preference fee, and delivery fees are not refunded.
Raymour & Flanigan
This furniture chain has been in business since 1947 and now operates more than 145 locations throughout the Northeast, with delivery service to select locations down the East Coast.
CR members who shopped at Raymour & Flanigan were mostly satisfied with their overall experience, giving the retailer top-notch scores for cleanliness and timeliness of delivery. Customers also thought the selection was solid, as was customer support.
The store offers a free next-day white-glove delivery service. Mattress purchases come with a 120-day comfort guarantee when you purchase the retailer’s five-year Platinum Protection Plan.
Beautyrest Black L-Class

The Beautyrest Black L-Class is sold at Raymour & Flanigan in various firmness levels. We tested the medium-firm, which, true to its description, lands a 6 out of 10 on our firmness-rating scale. Every size and style of sleeper—except for petite side sleepers—should be satisfied with the strong support of this 14-inch-thick mattress. Unlike many innersprings, it’s highly stable, so you can shift around all you like without waking your partner. According to our member surveys, Beautyrest innersprings earn good (but not great) ratings for comfort and owner satisfaction.
