'Do not do this': Badlands National Park responds after abandoned campsite found in wilderness area
An abandoned campsite found in a wilderness area inside Badlands National Park elicited a simple response from officials: "Do not do this."
There were "large quantities of food, soaked sleeping bags and a lot of trash" at the campsite, which was discovered by park rangers after it was reported by a visitor, the park said Aug. 2 in a Facebook post.
"Whether it was left behind due to unpreparedness or carelessness, the result is the same: ecological harm," the park said. "Leaving debris behind like this is negligent and is also illegal."
The "dilapidated nature" of the campsite initially prompted officials to deploy first responders. However, park rangers searched the campsite and determined it was likely abandoned when a thunderstorm moved through and water collected in the area.
"While we absolutely understand how scary thunderstorms can be out here and absolutely encourage visitors to take shelter if need be, we wish we had been notified," the park said. "This is, unfortunately, a very common occurrence in the park due to our extreme weather."
