1 dead, 4 hurt after SUV drives onto sidewalk, crashes into 3 vehicles in NE Portland
PORTLAND, Ore. (KPTV) - One man has died and several other people were seriously hurt when an SUV hit two people and then crashed into three vehicles in the King neighborhood on Thursday, according to the Portland Police Bureau.
At about 11:46 a.m., officers responded to a report of a serious crash in the 5900 block of Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. When officers arrived at the scene, they found one man dead and multiple people injured.
Police said a driver in a Ford Escape was heading north on Northeast MLK Jr. Boulevard when the SUV veered onto the sidewalk near the Jerrett Street bus stop and hit two men. A boy was also almost hit.
One of the men died at the scene, and the other was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Meanwhile, the Ford Escape driver continued north, where he sideswiped a Hyundai SUV stopped in the left turn lane at Northeast Ainsworth Street.
Then, the Ford Escape driver crossed a median north of Northeast Ainsworth Street and crashed head-on into a Buick sedan and a Toyota pickup truck, where the driver stopped.
Police initially said that all involved drivers were injured and taken to the hospital; however, according to authorities later, the Toyota pickup driver was unhurt and did not need a ride to the hospital.
In total, police said four people were taken to the hospital, including the Ford Escape driver.
Jeremiah Moore works at a Safeway near the crash, and said he uses that bus stop.
“That gives me shivers, seriously,” Moore said. “I feel lucky that it wasn’t me, but I still feel horrible for the families and everyone else.”

Police said that after an initial investigation, they do not believe the crashes were intentional.
“I don’t wanna call it an accident because we don’t have a full picture at this point of the cause, but I think it’s important to note that we don’t have any indication right now that this was some kind of attack or intentional act,” a PPB spokesperson said.
Police said many witnesses saw the crash, and they will be collecting video evidence and first-person accounts as they reconstruct what happened.
The Ford Escape driver has two prosthetic legs, but police said it was also unclear if that was a factor in the series of crashes.
“When I talk about some of the evidence that we found at the scene, there is an indication that it was a specially modified vehicle for a handicap driver,” the spokesperson said.
NE MLK Jr. Blvd. was closed for several hours while police investigated the scene, but fully reopened shortly after 5 p.m.
As officers continue to investigate, they are working with the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office. However, police have not arrested anyone at this time, and no citations have been issued, PPB said.
Police say this is the 20th deadly crash of the year in Portland and the eighth involving a pedestrian.
