Suspect surrenders to police after hours-long standoff on apartment roof in Portland
PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - A suspect for domestic violence who spent hours in a standoff on top of a Portland apartment building surrendered to police on Saturday afternoon, PPB said.
According to police, the man climbed to the roof of the building while trying to escape on Saturday morning around 7:30 a.m. At about 3:30 p.m., the suspect surrendered and was safely taken into police custody.
The incident started on Saturday morning when officers responded to a domestic violence report at apartments on East Burnside Street near Southeast 105th Avenue.
When officers arrived, the suspect refused to exit the apartment, eventually climbing out a window and onto the roof of the apartment complex.

Police and tactical teams surround the perimeter as a wanted suspect refuses to come down from the roof of an apartment complex.

Just after 10 a.m., officers called in additional tactical teams for support.
The apartment complex is a senior living community for people ages 55 and older.
“It was just really weird, something that I had never seen, you know,” said resident Debby Caldwell. “It was kind of exciting to see something like this happen in a 55 and over, you know?”
Caldwell said she is glad the standoff ended peacefully.
“It’s the day, it’s this day, some people are just off their rocker, stuff just happens,” Caldwell said.
Police said they did not use any force during the standoff, but several apartment units were evacuated.
East Burnside Street was closed to traffic for several hours, but has reopened, police said at 4 p.m.
This is a developing story and will be updated with any new information.
