Chocolat

Chocolat is a 2000 romance film, based on the 1999 novel of the same name by English author Joanne Harris. Much like Nonnas, the premise is simple but utterly heartwarming: Vianne and her six-year-old daughter Anouk drift around Europe looking to make a home for themselves. They eventually settle in a quiet and conservative French village, where Vianne opens up a chocolate shop just before Lent. Though at first, the villagers - and mainly the town mayor - disapprove of Vianne's presence and venture, she soon captures their hearts with her gentle and positive outlook on life.

The Farewell

While it might be lacking the foodie theme, The Farewell makes up for this in spades with its focus on family values - both positive and complex. Chinese-American Billi is an aspiring writer who maintains a close relationship with her Nai Nai (paternal grandmother) who lives in Changchun, China. When Billi finds out her grandmother has terminal cancer and has months to live, her family decide to keep it a secret from her, something Billi isn't happy about. Cue complicated family dynamics and an over-the-top wedding that may be a distraction from the more serious matters at hand.
