Baseball: Reno will face Bishop Manogue in 5A state losers bracket game on Friday

The state baseball tournament will have a rematch of the 5A-North Regional championship, thanks to some extra-inning fireworks.
Faith Lutheran used an eighth-inning rally to get past Bishop Manogue, 5-2, and then Basic put up three runs in the first three innings to down Reno, 3-0, in the Class 5A state baseball tournament on Thursday at Peccole Park.

Bishop Manogue will play Reno at 10 a.m. Friday at Peccole Park. The loser is eliminated and later Friday, the winner will play the loser of the Basic-Faith Lutheran game, scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
In the first game Thursday, Bishop Manogue was in control for the first four innings and Wade Huntsman was shutting down the Faith Lutheran bats as the Miners built a 2-0 lead after four innings.
Faith Lutheran got on the board in the fifth inning when Ace Hansen drove in a run. Then the Crusaders tied it in the sixth on a single by Rouselle Shepard.
The game was tied at 2 after seven innnigs. But the Miners defense had a couple lapses in the eighth. Faith Lutheran got the bases loaded with one out and Shepard singled to right to clear them and give Faith Lutheran a 5-2 lead, which held up for the final score.
Manogue coach Charles Oppio said Huntsman got a little tired in the sixth inning.
"We didn't play good defense for him," Oppio said. "We left plenty of guys on base. I was hoping to walk it off in the seventh. They're a good team. They can hit and they can pitch, obviously. It's a tough one. We had a lot of good quality at-bats and lined out a lot. It was a fight to the end."

Huntsman allowed six hits through six innings and had the Miners only strikeout of four pitchers Manogue used.
Faith Lutheran had 10 hits in the game and Bishop Manogue had eight.
Jaxsyn Durst was 4-for-4 for Manogue and Blaise Czyz was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
In the second game, Basic scored one run in each of the first three innings and prevented the Huskies from scoring, although Reno had six hits, to five for the Wolves.
Reno sophomore Braden Jones went the distance, striking out four and walking three.
Basic junior Lincoln Evans also pitched a complete game, striking out eight with one walk.
